Africa Day: Looking Forward, Not Just Back

Every May 25th, Africa Day pulsates with the continent's rich history, vibrant cultures, and a celebration of identity. This Africa Day, we shift the spotlight to celebrate the power of African Women Human Rights Defenders (AWHRDs) who are on the frontlines, fighting for a more just and equitable future.

While Africa Day traditionally honors the continent's cultural heritage and history, its true strength lies in its people, particularly the women who hold communities together and defend them. WHRDs are the engine of change, advocating for rights enshrined in the Maputo Protocol—equal education, economic participation, freedom from discrimination, and a voice in peacebuilding.

Their stories are our inspiration. From women defenders in Kenya fighting to end femicide, to those in Benin advocating for women's political participation and fair representation, to activists in the Gambia working to end Female Genital Mutilation, and to leaders in Uganda promoting digital literacy and safety for women and girls online—these are just a few examples of the countless WHRDs facing challenges daily to build a brighter Africa.

Africa Day is not just about celebrating the past; it is also a time to address today's challenges. While we honor our history and culture, it is also a platform to discuss and find solutions to our current issues. Looking forward, not just back: Africa Day is a chance to explore present realities alongside our rich heritage.

On Africa Day, may we honor women defenders’ struggles by demanding justice and holding governments accountable for upholding the Maputo Protocol and ensuring the safety of WHRDs. May we support organizations working with WHRDs, share their stories on social media and across different platforms, give them space to tell and share these stories, fund their initiatives, and celebrate their victories. May we break the bias and challenge discriminatory norms and practices that hinder women's progress.

By celebrating and supporting WHRDs, we celebrate the true spirit of Africa Day. Africa's potential is limitless when its women are enabled to reach their full potential. Let this Africa Day be a springboard for a future where WHRDs can work freely, their voices shaping a continent where all can thrive.

Happy Africa Day!
