AFL, admin and Formula 1!

Despite a cancellation at work and an early finish, we managed to make good use of our Thursday here in Melbourne. I had planned for a drive to New South Wales with work. The job being cancelled this morning it was an enjoyable early finish for me. I made my way home to knuckle down with some writing, networking and a run along the beach.

The AFL started last week here in Australia. This week Richmond take on Carlton at the MCG tonight in an enthralling match up. Becks and I are heading for Richmond to soak up some atmosphere and see what the fuss is about. I’ve often lamented the despise of great atmosphere arenas back at home. I miss White Hart Lane, Upton Park and the Victorian era stadiums we cherished back home. The recent announcement of ‘New Trafford’ alongside Everton’s farewell to Goodson Park shows the trend of out with the old and in with the new continues apace. Our game has changed in the EPL.

I’ve been told by Aussies that heading to an AFL game might be the spark to reignite my passion for football (just a different sort of footy!). I’ve heard only good things about the game of AFL. I’ve watched one or two games, but I’ve never been here at the start of a whole new season. Becks has decided to support Collingwood, because of her new friends at her book club. I did some research before committing to anyone as I wanted to really understand the game and get a feel for it.

Myself, I’ve opted for my local club St. Kilda. Having been told they are a band of constantly depressed and disappointed supporters I saw kinship as a Tottenham man. Finding out their anthem is the same tune as Spurs and that they haven’t won a title since the 60’s I was confident I’d found the club for me. Shane Warne being an ex youth player and their last title being in 1966, an Englishman’s favourite year, I’ve decided to gun for the Saints. We’re excited for the match tonight and to get to know Richmond better!

Coming in the next few days will be a few notes on the Australian Grand Prix. The season opener is literally right on our door step. Albert Park hosts one of the greatest shows on Earth. As a St. Kilda resident it feels like the circus has literally rolled into town. Making friends with a mad Ferrari fan this morning at 05:30 on my way to work has given me the buzz for the F1 weekend. There are all sorts of people from all over the world flocking to our local park, and I’m hoping to give a solid first hand perspective of the action and the atmosphere.

We can’t wait for our sporty weekend that lies ahead. As ever, thank you to any readers, subscribers or supporters of my work. I hope it gives you something to chew over this beautiful sunshine filled Thursday. Until next time!
