AFIC IN ETHIOPIA: Roundtable Discussion Sparks commitment from media to enhance advocacy efforts towards an inclusive public procurement

During a visit to Ethiopia from May 22nd to 26th, 2023, the Africa Freedom of Information Centre (AFIC) embarked on a collaborative journey with its country partner, KAL Law Office, and partnered with?the Inspired Ethiopian Youth Association (IEYA)?to advance the cause of promoting gender-responsive public procurement.
As part of its activities, AFIC organized a media round table discussion to disseminate the study findings to media practitioners, fostering a collective commitment to prioritize the issues faced by women-led businesses in procurement and actively shape public discourse.
The discussions revolved around the recommendations arising from a?comprehensive study conducted by AFIC?together with KAL on understanding the barriers and solutions to include Women-Led Businesses in Public Procurement.
By disseminating this important information, AFIC aimed to raise awareness about the challenges faced by women-led businesses in accessing public procurement contracts and promote gender-responsive policies and practices in Ethiopia.
Media practitioners attending the round table discussion expressed their commitment to prioritizing the issues highlighted in the study.
They recognized the pivotal role of the media in shaping public opinion and fostering informed discussions on gender equality and women’s economic empowerment.
The media representatives pledged to actively support and promote the cause of women-led businesses in procurement, ensuring that these issues receive the attention they deserve in public discourse.

By providing a platform for these stories to be heard, the media can play a pivotal role in influencing public perception, policy reforms, and fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for women-led businesses.
AFIC’s Executive Director, Mr. Gilbert Sendugwa highlighted the significance of the media’s active involvement, stating, “The media has a critical role in promoting transparency, accountability, and gender equality in public procurement.”
He added; “We are thrilled to see media practitioners committing to prioritize the issues faced by women-led businesses and playing an active role in shaping public discourse. This partnership will undoubtedly contribute to fostering a more equitable and inclusive society.”
In addition to the media round table discussion, AFIC engaged in productive discussions with its country partner, KAL Law Office, and collaborated with the Inspired Ethiopian Youth Association (IEYA) to leverage their expertise and resources in advancing the research recommendations.
These partnerships aim to foster a multi-dimensional approach to address the barriers faced by women-led businesses in procurement and advocate for policy reforms that promote gender equality and inclusivity.
Moving forward, AFIC and its partners will continue their collaborative efforts to ensure the research findings receive the attention they deserve.
