AFI to support inaugural UCT SRC AfriFund Fashion Show

African Fashion International (AFI) is proud to announce its support of the inaugural University of Cape Town’s SRC AfriFund Fashion Show Fundraiser.

The fundraiser will take place on Friday, September 30, 2022 at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Graduate School of? Business ACC.

The event will be held in conjunction with Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe’s African Fashion International (AFI) and is backed by various stakeholders which include UCT Graduate School of Business, Protea Hotel Marriot Cape Town, Topco Models and UCT’s International Academic Programmes Office.?

Featuring in the fashion show are some of South Africa’s top fashion brands; David Tlale, Imprint, Kat van Duinen and Alpha Climax. Production will be by leading show producer, Jan Malan.

The AfriFund was founded in 2021, with the vision of assisting African international students, who face possible financial exclusion, with the necessary funds to pay off their tuition fee debt so that they can continue with their studies.

On inception, the Fund received a generous donation of R500,000 from UCT Chancellor Dr Moloi-Motsepe. Since then, the Fund has assisted 21 students.

The goal this year is for the fund to help 50 students in 2023 and to achieve this, AfriFund will have to raise R1,000,000. The fashion showcase is part of the plan to raise this amount.

The UCT SRC AfriFund Fashion Show Fundraiser will centre around Pan Africanist themes with an emphasis on Environmental Sustainability and Social Activism. During the show, these themes will manifest themselves through artistic and intellectual expressions.

"As Africans we are but different variations of the same person. Where, whether African or not, difference is not a barrier but the beginning of exchange for the advancement and appreciation of alternative possibilities,” says UCT SRC International Students Co-ordinator and organiser, Cheryl Sambadzai.

“It is a uniting force, and a personal wish to see this aspect and more, of the Ubuntu spirit emanated in our daily lives. Our humanity demands it."
