Affiliate Marketing Is Like Falling In Love
One of my other "gigs" is I'm a relationship consultant. Nope. Not a relationship coach but a consultant. I approach helping people about relationships the same way I've approached providing solutions in software development. First I ask enough questions to understand your "requirements." Then I proceed to put together a set of "recommendations" on how you should proceed to your desired result.
What's interesting though? It's how similar affiliate marketing actually is to falling in love.
What happens when you fall in love?
The first thing that happens when you meet this person is you initially become very excited. You can't wait to see them. You can't wait to spend time together. They are all you think about. In the relationship world this is known as the "honeymoon" phase, with all it's attendant brain chemistry and dopamine neurons firing. This can last anywhere from about 6 months to a full 3 years. During this time you view everything with blinders on.
It's not that different when you first start your affiliate marketing business. You're excited about the possiblities, and you are eager to be working on every aspect of your business. You're literally "in love." This new business venture you've discovered has you totally enamored. You just know that this new business "love affair" is going to work out.
But then it hits.
What is that?
The end of the "honeymoon phase." In relationships, this is when you actually meet the real person you began interacting with while you were busy falling I love with somebody else. Why I say somebody else is because that dopamine just doesn't let you see clearly. You are both on your best behavior, and neither of you see all the warts you're covering up.
The same thing goes for the affiliate marketing business. While the "dream" of happily ever after is there as well? The reality, as you will inevitably discover, is entirely something else. And when that time comes you will face the same thing in your business that lovers do in their relationships. Will you give up and move on to a different (ad)venture?

Will you "stick it out?"
Sticking it out is what all great relationships are made of.
Whether you are in a relationship with a lover or this new business you've "found."
And this is also when another transition happens if you're open. Instead of looking at your lover as someone to "meet your needs," you start to value THEM for who they are in themselves. In affilliate marketing this is the time you quit looking at your customer as your meal ticket. And you begin to do something very important instead.
Valuing Them
Lovers who last value their partners for who they are, and want to share themselves with them because of this. In affilliate marketing if your "love" is going to last? You'll need to do this with your customer as well.
Once you come to value them, you realize business is all about adding value. Just like in romantic love, what you receive is always an indirect consequence of the value you put in.
That's why I say affiliate marketing is like falling in love with your lover.
If your business is going to thrive, you have to get your eyes off yourself!
