Hot topic: Challenges Faced by Women in Agriculture and Intra-African Trade
In reading Making the AfCFTA Work for Women in the Agri-food Sector, I learned about the systemic issues hindering women’s participation in agriculture and trade. I realized that lower literacy and education gaps reflect societal neglect, limiting women’s economic roles and reinforcing gender disparities. I found out that patriarchal systems prioritize male control over resources like land and financial services, creating barriers for women entering formal markets. The absence of reliable market information systems and critical trade data networks further disadvantages women. High transportation costs and cultural mobility restrictions limit their economic opportunities. Additionally, the digital divide exacerbates these challenges, as women often lack access to technology that could aid their participation in modern trade. These interconnected barriers create a cycle of disadvantage, restricting women’s economic empowerment and their ability to benefit from the AfCFTA. If you want to learn more about these challenges and solutions, please listen to our podcast discussing this publication in detail here.

2 个月It's really a hot topic at this moment:Challenges Faced by Women in Agriculture and Intra-African trade. Women across Africa are facing the same challenges, the inequalities and barriers. My problem today is how the Protocole on Women and Youth in trade is going to be implemented and enforced in African countries, wchich measures are going to be put in place in order to really empower African women.

2 个月Insightful. Women in agriculture and intra-African trade face several challenges, including: 1. Limited Access to Financial Resources: Women often lack access to land, credit, and modern farming tools. 2. Inequality in Trade Opportunities: Gender disparities in trade policies and market access limit their participation. 3. Lack of Training: Women have fewer opportunities for skills development in modern agricultural practices and trade. 4. Cultural Barriers: Traditional gender roles may restrict their involvement in decision-making. 5. Inadequate Infrastructure: Poor transport, storage, and market facilities hinder efficient trade for women. Women face a lot of challenges and as long as we don’t support women and provide adequate resources and services we shall continue to hinder the progress to food security and agriculture.
