AfCFTA Launch Friday 1 January 2021 - What You Need To Know

Commencement of Trade under AfCFTA: A zoom event will take place between 11am - 12 noon GMT on 1 January 2021, moderated by Mark Eddo. Statements will be made by Presidents Cyril Ramaphosa African Union Chair, Issoufou Mahamadou as Champion, Pres. Nana Akufo Addo as host of the Secretariat and Afrexim bank, ECA and AfroChampions, interspersed with video clips on AfCFTA; the event will be streamed also via Facebook and Youtube. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission and the Secretary-General of AfCFTA will make statements. The event will be available at - https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_sXzsVzExR8eu1Wiw6jKMXQ

Actual shipments will be flagged off by Member States that arrange them throughout the month of January, as part of the build-up to the African Union Feb 2021 Summit. For example, the Hon Minister of Trade of Ghana will flag off shipments from the airport and sea port on Monday 4 January 2021.

Private and public sector initiatives will arrange corridor voyages, to make the point that travelling and trading across borders under the AfCFTA regime has started in earnest. For example, AfroChampions have organised a corridor voyage from Nigeria to Ghana. Also, throughout the month of January, they will undertake a dissemination campaign featuring celebrities, SMEs and members of the public participating in the AfCFTA Vision challenge, i.e their expectations of AfCFTA.

And with my dear friend, Dr Andre Tchimogne, we co-authored another article deeply linked to AFCFTA, but still in French: Les corridors des états membres de l’OMAOC pour les chargeurs de l’UCCA : qu'est ce qui fait problème, pour quelles solutions plus optimales ? , in “ The african shippers’ news”, of August 2020. So I still expect all of you to read this other article, because there is no free trade area without an appropriate transport network! We made the analysis for West and Central Africa, but in reality, it can be extended to all the others countries, sub-regions and regions of the continent!

Recently I wrote a paper on that subject, but in French : “ La capitalisation de la Zone de Libre-Echange Continentale Africaine (Z.L.E.C.Af.) pour les chargeurs de l’UCCA ” in the African magazine “ The african shippers’ news of the month of August 2020. So I expect that all of you are going to appreciate it and give me his deepest impression !
