AFA #67: The Benefits of Running Your Life Like a Business Series Pt1: Who's on your Board of Directors?

Lately, I’ve been treating life like a business. As I work on restructuring and growing my businesses, I’ve started seeing clear similarities between entrepreneurship and the way we navigate life. What not better to start a series on this called "The Benefits of Running Your Life Like a Business"

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned about business is the importance of a?board of directors.

In business, a board of directors exists to provide guidance and oversight. They’re not involved in the day-to-day operations, but they offer strategic direction, challenge ideas, and ensure the company is staying on track toward its goals (very similar to Coaching/Consulting which then made me think I need to join more director boards). The CEO may be the one making the final call, but the board plays an important role in keeping the CEO accountable, pushing them to think bigger, and offering perspectives they might not see on their own.

Who we listen to, whose advice we take, and whose perspectives we value can make or break our ability to grow. Yet, we surround ourselves with people out of familiarity rather than intention.

Not everyone should have a say in our decisions, yet many of us allow opinions from people who don’t share our vision, understand our journey, or who don't push us to improve. That’s why we need to be more selective about who sits on our board of directors.

Your board should be made up of people who bring different perspectives. Those who challenge you, those who encourage you, and those who have the experience to offer real wisdom. You need people who won’t just tell you what you want to hear but who will push you when you start playing small. People who see your blind spots, who help you stay accountable, and who can connect you to the right opportunities when you need them. A good board is diverse, not just in background but in thought.

Here's a snippet of my board and the role they play:

God: I have to let it be known that the head of my board, the one who provides divine wisdom, purpose, and direction for my life is God. He ensures that I live by faith and not fear.

My Mother: Reminds me of where I came from, ensures I never lose sight of my values, and provides that sense of home, love and comfort that is necessary to remain authentic.

My Pastor: Challenges me to grow spiritually, making sure that my ambitions don’t distract me from my relationship with God. He also teaches me the Word of God so I can understand and reference God for myself.

My Accountability Coach: Bridges the gap between my intentions and my actions. She provides so many inspiring words and frameworks on how to navigate life and reminds me of the commitments I made to myself.

My Bestfriend: Reminds me of who I am outside of my work, outside of my achievements, and outside of the pressure to perform. Funny enough she loves me for the unserious things in life like how funny I am, and my availability for her to just vent and have fun with. She reminds me I am human.

Your lifestyle and values will determine which positions need to be filled. But having the right people isn’t enough. You also have to know how to use their advice. Not every opinion, even from the people you trust, should be followed blindly. You’re the CEO of your life. That means filtering advice, taking what serves you, and making decisions with full ownership. It means having regular check-ins with the people who guide you, not just when things go wrong but consistently, so you’re always thinking ahead rather than just reacting. It means creating an environment where you are constantly challenged and supported at the same time.

Building a business is one thing, but building a life that truly aligns with your vision requires the same level of strategy and intention.

So, ask yourself: Who’s on your board of directors? And are they the right people to help you get where you want to go?

I love the analogy of a ‘Board of Directors’ for your life! Who holds us accountable and influences our life’s direction should definitely be selected with as much - or arguably more - diligence than in business.
