AESO 2024 Long Term Outlook for Alberta

Alberta has seen substantial uncertainty in the electricity sector over the last year related to the government’s changes in policy, the AUC pause on renewable approvals, and the AESO’s restructuring of the energy market.

In May, the AESO released their 2024 Long-Term Outlook which forecasts significant load growth from continued electrification, industrial growth, and AI data center demands. Over the past week, we saw Alberta’s last coal-fired generation facility come offline six years ahead of schedule.

With unparalleled solar and wind resources in the province, Alberta has a great opportunity to support the net-zero targets; however, significant permitting risk for renewable energy adds great complexity to entering the Alberta electricity market.

Our team of regulatory experts at Green Cat Renewables are at the forefront of regulatory strategy and have been helping our clients navigate this ever-changing and complex landscape to reduce regulatory risk and maximize your project’s chances at achieving approvals.

Please reach out to see how we can support all aspects of your project development process in Alberta. Our team can support your environmental, permitting, or engineering and asset management needs for wind, solar and BESS in the province.
