In this short interview, we sit down with Roald Janse, Managing Director of Aegon GBSC and Chief Risk Officer for Aegon International, to discuss the exciting developments within Aegon’s actuarial team. He shares insights into the new roles, the ambitious growth plans, and the unique opportunities awaiting actuaries who join this globally impactful team.
Roald, you are the Managing Director of Aegon Global Business Solutions Center in Budapest. Can you tell us about your role and the ongoing operations here?
During the transition of Aegon globally in the recent years we have built a major presence here in Budapest, with over 300 professionals working in key areas like IT, Finance, Asset Management, Audit, Risk and Actuarial services. My role is to support the growth and success of these teams, which deliver vital services to Aegon’s subsidiaries globally—from the US and Hong Kong to Brazil and Spain. I also serve as the Chief Risk Officer for Aegon International, overseeing the risk functions for all non-US and non-UK subsidiaries and joint ventures. I am focused on strengthening our capabilities and talents here in Hungary.
We understand there is significant growth in the actuarial team in Budapest. Could you share what’s changing?
The actuarial team is one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing areas in our organization. Currently, there are two major areas of expansion. First, we’re building an actuarial team to support Transamerica, our US subsidiary. We began with a “first line model validation” team, helping the model development teams by reviewing and refining their models. This work is both challenging and rewarding, given the complexity of US products, which include financial guarantees and advanced instruments like hedges and derivatives. The team has already earned excellent feedback, and we’re expanding from here, supporting Transamerica in several finance areas.
That’s fascinating. What other roles or expansions are happening in the actuarial team?
The second area of growth is just as exciting. Beyond our work with Transamerica, we’re establishing a global actuarial model development team based here in Budapest—a true center of excellence. This team will provide actuarial modeling support, creating a unique opportunity for actuaries with modeling experience to impact Aegon’s global operations. We’re currently hiring for this team and also seeking a financial reporting actuary. This team is a fantastic platform for actuaries looking to work on diverse projects and grow into managerial or highly specialized roles.

With such significant development, what kind of professionals are you looking to bring on board?
We’re looking for skilled, self-driven actuaries, especially those with a background in model development. For instance, experience in Python is highly valuable, as well as familiarity with actuarial software like AXIS, Prophet, or MoSes. These roles are suited for those who are ready to take ownership of complex projects, coordinate team efforts, and uphold the highest standards of actuarial professionalism. It’s a great fit for actuaries who enjoy both technical modeling and engaging with stakeholders at different levels.
