AECOM you are far more than just a number.

You are more than just a number at AECOM. This sentiment might seem surprising when working for a global multinational business, but it truly reflects my personal experience.

In February 2022, I was rushed into the hospital for an emergency seven-hour operation to remove a benign tumor the size of a tennis ball—a condition I hadn't even known I had. Following that life-saving operation, I began a new chapter of my life living with a stoma, which I later named StormaZ. Initially, I struggled with the physical and emotional adjustments, including wardrobe malfunctions in the middle of the night. However, I gradually came to appreciate the stoma for the gift of life it represented.

Thirteen months later having worked with my stoma like many others out there, I was presented with an amazing opportunity to have my stoma reversed. The stoma that I once despised, and later came to respect for saving my life, was to become a part of my past.

Now, I am back at AECOM post operation in, just two weeks into my return.

Throughout my journey of self-discovery, and physical and mental recovery, I have never felt more supported. My family, my wife, my friends, and my employer have all played crucial roles. At no point did I feel pressured to rush back to work. The thoughtful gifts, messages of encouragement from management and colleagues, and a top-down approach to support allowed me to focus solely on my recovery.

AECOM provided an environment where I could be selfish in the best way possible—dedicating time to heal and prioritise my health. Their unwavering support demonstrated that at AECOM, employees are valued far beyond their contributions to the bottom line.
