Advocating for Human & Civil Rights for the LGBT Community
On Friday at 5PM the call for applications for the exchange program, “Advocating for Human and Civil Rights for the LGBT Community” will close. This exchange program, run by the Irish Institute at Boston College and funded in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Dublin and U.S. Consulate in Belfast, invites professionals from Ireland and Northern Ireland to study LGBT rights in the U.S.
Should you want to apply, the deadline looms; so, there is little time to waste! But don’t worry; the application is not complicated. A short biography, a few details about your professional life, and a cover letter explaining not only how you will benefit from participating in the exchange but also what you bring to the program are required. (You can find more information about the application process by visiting our site here).
Leadership communities
Many applicants think about themselves when applying for a program. They ask themselves: how will I benefit from participating? But Irish Institute participants and programs are different. Our programing works to help participants help one another. Programing is not so much about an individual participant. Instead, programing is about helping participants create leadership communities that support growth and development.
The 4 pillars
To help participants create those leadership communities, we build our programs on 4 pillars: learning, reflection, networking, and application. Programing is about new learning experiences. These learning experiences are with both faculty at Boston College and with leading professionals who have practical experience shaping policies and practices in the U.S. With those new learning experiences, participants reflect on policy and convention in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Giving participants the tools to consider their strategy is key to developing more impactful strategy. During the exchange, participants network with one another and with their peers in the U.S. Networking is something more than a nice conversation over canapés. For us, networking is about developing meaningful professional relationships that promote sharing and the exchange of ideas and resources. Finally, we help participants and groups work toward a meaningful outcome—a change, an innovation or adaptation, a growth—that can be applied following the program. Programing is high-impact and with a real purpose.
