Advocating for Gymnastics Safety: Overcoming Industry Barriers Together
"The future development of gymnastics is a complex and complicated process. Part of it involves new technique for elements and creation of new skills. But human abilities are limited, and therefore, we need new, modern gymnastics apparatus, which would help gymnasts perform new skills and at the same time provide safety.” - Nellie Kim, VP Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG)
Dear LinkedIn Community,
As advocates for gymnastics safety, it's imperative that we address the challenges hindering progress in this crucial area. The safety and well-being of gymnasts should be paramount, yet the industry is fraught with barriers that impede the adoption of safer practices and equipment.
In recent years, concerns about gymnastics safety have come to the forefront, fueled by high-profile incidents and a growing awareness of the risks athletes face. From the prevalence of injuries to the long-term impact on athletes' health, the need for change is evident.
However, effecting change in the gymnastics industry is no easy task. Exclusive supplier agreements and institutional resistance have created significant hurdles for advocates and innovators seeking to introduce safer equipment and practices. These agreements limit competition and innovation, stifling progress and perpetuating a status quo that prioritizes convenience over safety.
