State Broadband Leaders Convene to Maximize BEAD Funding
State broadband leaders gathered in Myrtle Beach, SC, this week for the Wireless Infrastructure Association ’s BEAD 2.0 conference.
With a focus on maximizing the impact of the $42 billion federal Broadband, Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program, the conference highlighted innovative uses of Non-Deployment Funds to address issues of mobility, digital equity, workforce development, and broadband’s transformative role across sectors like healthcare, education, and agriculture.
Panels and interactive roundtables with broadband leaders, experts from the U.S. Department of Commerce , and Internet Service Providers covered topics ranging from sustainable financing for broadband to multi-dwelling unit (MDU) connectivity.
EducationSuperHighway Shares Urban Edge Apartment Wi-Fi Project Update at AnchorNets
At the SHLB Coalition #AnchorNets2024 conference in Washington, D.C., EducationSuperHighway Apartment Wi-Fi General Manager Tony Schloss and Will Pfeffer of Boston’s Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) presented on the Columbus Corridor connectivity project. Urban Edge, a nonprofit community development corporation with Massachusetts Broadband Institute ( Massachusetts Technology Collaborative ) funding, will deploy an Apartment Wi-Fi network throughout their 50+ properties in the area, totaling 800+ units receiving free or low-cost broadband service. Schloss and Pfeffer’s presentation described the project’s progress and highlighted how states across the country have committed nearly $500 million to similar MDU connectivity programs.
