Advocating for a better future together

As we approach the one-year mark of America’s Credit Unions, I find myself looking ahead with excitement. This organization is built to move the credit union movement forward with purpose, passion, and strength, and there’s lots to look forward to on the horizon.

We’re full steam ahead working to elect a credit union-friendly majority in the next Congress—a critical part of advancing our advocacy agenda next year.

In fact, I wrote in CUInsight this week that now is the time to put in the work to create the environment where credit unions thrive. Our advocacy today will translate to future policy changes that make people’s lives better, and it requires all of us working together.

With looming battles over tax reform, interchange, and more, having credit union champions in key positions is not only how we’ll start the year in a great position for upcoming policy battles. It’s how we’ll move priorities like field of membership modernization and additional member business lending flexibility forward.

But while advocacy is job number one, we’re also here to support credit unions with access to world-class compliance assistance, and development and growth opportunities to ensure you can evolve to continue meeting members’ needs.

This week we unveiled a new website, one designed to give credit unions an improved experience and easier access to all the resources that come with membership. If you haven’t checked it out yet, don’t wait! From handouts and analyses to bolster your advocacy, to data and tools to help you understand the operating environment, we are putting the power of all we do at your fingertips. The website will continue to evolve and improve—just as you do to better serve your members. It’s another key element in our ongoing transformation and focus to bring the credit union movement together with one unified voice.

Responding to Hurricane Helene

The aftermath of Hurricane Helene is heartbreaking, and credit unions’ people helping people efforts are out in full force. The National Credit Union Foundation—along with state Leagues and foundations—are working to help credit unions and staff recover, as well as victims in affected areas.

Pushing for a ‘clean’ NDAA for FY25

We joined with state Leagues in urging Armed Services Committee members to reject any amendments to the FY25 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would place burdens on credit unions. The NDAA is a must-pass bill before the end of the year, and the committee is expected to start planning consideration of amendments shortly. We want to make sure the Big Box Bailout Bill and expanded credit union liability language aren’t added as amendments that would harm service to credit union members.

Dupaco Credit Union shares proactive efforts on fraud fight

Shout out to Dupaco Credit Union, which was featured on CBS Mornings for its pro-active efforts to fight fraud, including educating staff and members. Dupaco Vice President of Fraud Services Jill Gogel explains how these efforts not only protect members and staff but also helps prevent the emotional and mental toll these frauds and scams can take on overall well-being. October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and we’d love to hear more from credit unions who are taking action to help prevent fraud.

Diversity self-assessment submissions open through Jan. 31

The NCUA is collecting submissions of its diversity self-assessment from now through Jan. 31. This voluntary assessment not only helps your credit union assess where it is on the diversity, equity, and inclusion journey, but will help the NCUA develop resources to assist credit unions’ diversity and inclusion needs.
