Advocate for sustainable development goals (SDGs) and more!

What are Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

17 goals developed by the United Nations with one mission in mind: to end poverty, protect the planet, and deliver universal peace and prosperity by 2030.

"It's important that we help people discover the agency and resources to get these goals done and improve the word. Libraries have incredible potential to help this happen."
Debra Rowe, Professor of Energy Management and Renewable Energy, President of US Partnerships for Education for Sustainable Development

What is the role for libraries?

It’s up to you to decide how you want to be involved. Understanding your library’s strengths can also play a role. If your department excels in collaboration, facilitate connections?around initiatives across campus. If data collection is your strength, focus on supporting reporting efforts.

Plus, you might already be contributing to SDG-related initiatives without realizing it. Implementing the SDG framework can help you showcase the impact of your work within your organization and beyond.

How to get started

  1. Develop resources for your users- but don’t start from scratch: Create a LibGuide or resource page and promote it to your users. Don’t forget to see what has already been created by librarians around the world.
  2. Measure your institution’s SDG impact: Understanding research strengths of your institution can provide a first step towards integrating SDGs. Tools like SciVal can help you identify the areas of SDG prominence, as Doyeon Kim explains.
  3. Partner with other offices around campus- or other libraries: Discover existing SDG efforts on campus and get involved. Libraries can bring value to these collaborations through contributing data, hosting event spaces or even connecting other departments.
  4. Advocate for SDGs in strategic plans: Incorporate SDGs into your library’s strategic goals and push for their inclusion in wider institutional plans to drive campus-wide initiatives.
