Advocacy matters...

In the wise words of Alexander Hamilton, "our first duty to society is justice". To whom or for what, I ask YOU--to everyone (your children, your household, your work environment, your community). While many of us may be passionate about one thing or another, the fact is alllllll of it matters. Whether it is concern for diversity and inclusion; social justice; civil and human rights; economic equality; survivors of domestic violence or human trafficking; at risk youth; homeless veterans; hunger insecure families; disabled athletes; or cancer (of any kind). Keep in mind, what you lend your time, your talents, your treasures or your thoughts too, sheds light on what matters to you (and what you will advocate for). For those who advocate for others, there is always a need. They often must muster up the courage and consistently think of creative ways to ask others for support. It is said, "where this is a will, there is a way", to get the important work done, right?. Questions for you to ponder - what would others say you are passionate about? Would you be described as a giver or taker? Lastly, does it show in your actions (if not, why not). Hmmm, I wonder, did you allow someone else to dim your light for what matters to you, or have you grown silent for some other reason? I challenge you to pause and reflect on what changed (and why). Then, I encourage you to look for ways to rediscover your passion, and get back to work. Where this is purpose, there is appreciation for life. May I say, your cause needs your passion - to grow (beyond the vision), and to gain (much needed supporters). As an advocate for issues that matter to me, I welcome your presence and your passion.

Thanks, Dion. Burnout is real in advocacy and it's easy to lose compassion and start being numb to it all when you do this work day and day out for years, or decades, like myself. It's important to realize the signs and not let it get to that point and figure out how to find your way back. I get enough people thanking me for taking the time to explain things others have not and that puts wind in my sails and keeps me going. It reminds me that I can make a difference in someone's experience even when we cannot take their case. You, my friend, are always a bright light, every time I see you in person. I hope you are getting your cup filled too!
