Advocacy is NOT ENOUGH!
From December 20-23, Porto hosted over 140 youth delegates from more than 90 countries for a forum focused on various issues, including the active involvement of young people in decision-making processes.
The second day featured an Intergenerational Dialogue, offering diverse perspectives on how youth can create meaningful impact and drive change. The discussion explored the challenges, opportunities, and experiences that have shaped—and continue to shape—youth-led initiatives.
A key takeaway from the dialogue was the reminder that youth are often present in discussions but not fully involved in decision-making. Real change must come from the younger generation, as it is often youth who are less entrenched in established thinking and more willing to question the status quo. As young people, we are called to ask why, and to challenge the notion that “it doesn’t have to be this way.”
Change begins with curiosity and is realized through action. It requires the courage to act without waiting for permission or an invitation. Youth must be proactive: identifying opportunities, gathering tools, and stepping forward to make an impact.
A critical factor in empowering youth is providing access to information, fostering dialogue, and developing the skills necessary to stay aware of emerging issues and ready to seize opportunities for change.
As the dialogue emphasized, “When we don’t understand the problem, we can’t be part of the solution.”
We know we have the right tools when we don’t need to ask what’s next.
