Advice is worth a camel!
You will find this nonsense if you are unfamiliar with the story behind this old saying.
An old story says that a man lived in the desert with his wife and two daughters. He decided to leave his family, searching for another way of making a living. He reached a place where he started working with a wise man. After working for 20 years, he decided to leave, taking with him all the money that he had gained.
But the wise man suggested giving him three camels as his wages for working all these years. The man accepted the offer. However, the wise man offered a weird request; he said I would advise you and take one camel in change. The man got the offer and heard the advice, but it didn't make sense to him! So, he decided to go for the advice and give another camel away. Still, unfortunately, it was a waste, according to him. However, he decided to go on and ask for a third piece of advice! He gave away all that he gained for three pieces of advice!
On his way back, he faces three obstacles and uses these three pieces of advice to save his life and gain wealth. So, when we say "advice is worth a camel," we mean that advice is valuable if used when in need!
While this man gave away all he gained for working 20 years, an English proverb says nothing is given so freely as advice. People?love?to?advise you on?the?correct?way?to?do?something?or?how?to?approach?a?problem,?whether?you?want?that?advice or not!
Although, in Arabic culture, people keep saying advice is worth a camel, nowadays, the English proverb is more applicable to the current situation!
