Advice for those “between positions” (from someone who has been there)
?
?Lots of folks entering the ranks of those “between positions.”? I have been there more than most, so let me suggest some advice.
First, while this situation is likely new to you, millions have gone through it and thrived. Know that you are not alone, and this is not personal. This is how the business world works today and frankly no one is immune.
As they say in sports, “trust the process.”? Again, many others have been in the same situation. You do not have to re-invent the job search.
Contact every headhunter you know or have heard about to let them know you are in the hunt. This is informational only and should not be a hard sell interaction. But, they need to know.
Take time for yourself. I am sure you will feel like the clock is ticking (and it is), but recharge, refresh and re-engage. You will not have a gift of time for yourself again in the near future, so take advantage.
Your days are going to feel a little empty. No endless meetings, no meaningless emails, no useless training. Try to do one meaningful thing every day and take that for an accomplishment.

Learn a new skill. The feeling of accomplishment that comes from learning is amazing and affirming.
“Your network is your net worth.”? If you have not built a great network, now is the time. Post interesting articles. Comment on others’ interesting posts. Invite everyone you know to Link on LinkedIn. Invite interesting people that you do not know. Build that network. And work it.
Leverage your network. Let folks know your status and your interests. Do not feel you have to write a long story about your journey, but if it makes you feel better, do so.
Reach out to senior execs you know. The point of the conversation should not be “do you have a job for me,” but rather should be “what is happening in our industry? What is next?”? You will learn a lot and have a chance to show how smart you are, as well.
Understand and accept that the search will take way longer than you expect. There will be dead ends that suddenly light up. There will be fits and starts. But ultimately progress is made.
So, best of luck and work hard. If I can answer any questions, please let me know.
