Advice from a CEO to the Next Generation

Advice from a CEO to the Next Generation

I was recently talking to someone who told me they spent a decade of their career in a position where nobody invested in their knowledge, growth, or career goals. They didn't have a mentor or anyone to guide them to long-term success.

They told me it was the biggest regret of their career. They left that position to move to a new company and actually started in a lower-level position. Immediately the company assigned them to a mentor who poured into their success.

In the short time they've been there they have already exceeded more of their professional goals than they had in the last 10 years in their previous position.

This goes to show you the power of mentorship is not just helpful but essential for growth.

Whether you're still in college, early in your career, or still trying to learn and grow these tips will help you find and land your next mentor. ??

?? My First Steps into Commercial Real Estate

I vividly recall the pivotal moment when I decided a career in commercial real estate was what I wanted for my life. As anyone who has been in that position knows, there are numerous routes to take and niches to go down.

Just jumping in headfirst without a clue of the long-term impact of each of those decisions was not something I was willing to do. I reached out to my uncle, a veteran in the field, and asked him point blank: What do you actually do?

?? The Early Steps: Seeking Guidance

  1. Internships and College Days: College is the perfect time to explore internships that offer real-world experience. This not only helps you determine your career path but also lays the foundation for future networking opportunities.
  2. First Job Connections: As you step into your first professional role, focus on connecting with individuals who resonate with your values and aspirations. Having a mentor who is willing to roll up their sleeves and guide you through the trenches can be a career-defining asset. Recognize the power of these connections – they can shape your trajectory in unimaginable ways.

In my interview with the President of Third Wave Development Chuck Hollis, he talks about starting at his first job. He decided to pursue the construction route in CRE and took his first position with Centex Homes.

He tells the story of trying to get a home through a frame inspection and having to work late on a Friday night.

His boss came to help him at 6:00 PM on that Friday because the inspector was tough as nails. That has resonated with Chuck his entire career. He still has strong relationships with people from Centex to this day.

Understanding the power of what those people can do for you will drastically shift your career. Choose a workplace where your bosses are your mentors. The ones who are willing to get in the mud and get dirty with you to see you succeed.

?? Constant Growth: Adding Value

  1. Throughout Your Career: The concept of mentorship extends far beyond the early days of your career. You need to continuously add value to your relationships. Research your mentors' challenges and endeavors – this is where true value lies. Understand their pain points and be prepared to offer insights, solutions, and a fresh perspective.
  2. Genuineness and Hard Work: Chuck's advice echoes the power of authenticity and dedication. Being genuine in your interactions and striving for excellence in your endeavors will set you apart. Your sincerity and effort will resonate with mentors who are eager to guide someone who truly values their wisdom.

?? Expert Insights: Chuck Hollis Interview

In our interview for the Beyond the Blueprint podcast, Chuck shares insights into the mentor-mentee dynamic. He astutely notes that discerning the difference between genuine seekers of knowledge and those who only seek to take is crucial. This distinction applies both early in your career and when navigating complex deals in the future.

?? Your Pathway to Success

Incorporating these principles into your journey will lead to incredible growth and success. Building a network of mentors will not only guide you in your career path but also provide you with support and lasting relationships along the way.
