Advice around Relocating

Relocating can be a great opportunity for a fresh start in a new location. Whilst finance is consistent - (most practice firms and industry clients hire the same roles), here is some guidance around your job search when relocating.

If your relocation is career-led I would consider what the non-negotiables are then work from there.

• Do you want to progress in practice or go into industry?
• Will the move offer you the sectors of clients that you want to work with?
• Do the salary ranges in your chosen location work for you?
• Is there scope for a long-term career?

If newly-qualified, London may appeal to you as the centre of Finance in the UK. There are a plethora of clients to choose from and you will have access to a variety of opportunities across different sectors. If not already here, some candidates move to London once qualified, gain a few years' exposure and then move out again. Manchester and Bristol are also areas that have large capabilities with lots of clients and accounting firms.

If your focus is to have more work-life balance, you may choose to work in a smaller practice firm or move into industry.

If your relocation is location-led, you may need to make compromises depending on where you are moving to;

• There aren't as many industry opportunities in more rural parts of the UK
• Your client exposure may need to change to match the requirements of your new location

• If moving to a local firm or company, though the initial salary may be competitive, your progression might be limited due to the size of your team
