Adventures in Thermography, Bathroom Edition

During a recent inspection, I noticed a funny shadow on the bathtub back wall. This was a perfect opportunity to use my thermal imager. With infrared, I could clearly see a window hidden behind the shower wall creating a temperature difference of about 10°F!

While it can help speed up your bathroom renovation, it is not recommended to simply cover a window in this way. Instead, have the window removed and the wall properly insulated and sealed. Otherwise there is the potential for water intrusion within the wall, creating mold and rot. And in the winter time, the lack of proper insulation will create freezing conditions within the bathroom and a very uncomfortable shower experience.
