Adventures... of a lifetime
Gratitude
Over 21.5 years, 12 roles, 3 countries and innumerable experiences, my fascinating journey with Unilever is still going strong as I now move (back) to Corporate Centre in London as EVP Controls and Risk management for the group. 15 of these years have been with one of the best companies in the World (in my book) i.e., Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL). This iconic institution continues to power on with its of motto of ‘’doing well by doing good’’. With purpose driven brands and best in quality products, we cater to all needs of our consumers and at all price points. While our market research data says we serve 9 out of 10 households in this country, I would like to believe that we touch all households.
Leaders define an Institution and its culture. The doyens that I worked at HUL with have taught me everything I know. In essence, this company builds your character, and your character defines your life! Tell me if you find a better or more compelling rationale.
My last 3.5 years as CFO of this HUL have been memorable. I am immensely grateful to the HUL Board and my colleagues on the management committee, they are outstanding and continue to take the company to new heights. At the C Suite level, an effective leadership team depends on the ‘’CEO and CFO being a great double act." In Sanjiv, we have possibly one of the best business leaders, he is an inspiration for our people and to the broader society. He stretched my ambition, gave me the full freedom to fly – raise ambition, take risks, support, and challenge. He gave me the opportunity to play all my 4 roles (strategist, catalyst, operator, and steward) in the right measure. A heartfelt thank you to Sanjiv.
Optimism is contagious…. here comes the Sun!
About a year ago, I wrote a piece on LinkedIn called ‘Here comes the Sun’ which in essence was my reflection on the need to safeguard our people and build a brighter future together. Circa 2021 and it is a sense of déjà vu…the current situation from the spread of COVID 19 is of great concern with thousands of fellow Indians suffering. 12 months ago, we had the resolve, this time we have the solutions – social distancing, washing hands and vaccination and they will help beat the virus. This is not the time to let our guard and mask down.
I will again quote from my last year’s piece ‘’ Historically, we have had the tendency to overestimate outcomes in the short term (both on what is likely to happen and what we can do about it) and underestimate change that can occur in the long term. As I reflect, I believe we are experiencing a paradigm shift… we will emerge stronger and orchestrate better times ahead…. for here comes the Sun!
Small steps will make a big difference
Yes, I get that most would want to be happy and optimistic; have not met anyone who prefers suffering. We know it is easier said than done. James Clear makes a compelling case in his book ‘’Atomic Habits’’ when he says that you need to focus on the kind of person you want to become and create ‘identity-based habits’ i.e., frequent repetition automates behaviors turning them into habits. Make a start by reading this book.
I intend to keep introspection series going… While writing down an idea feels like a detour, not writing it down is a real waste of time.
Be safe!

3 年Srini you continue to make us proud. Many congratulations and best wishes. You have had an amazing career and will continue to shine for years to come. I remember meeting you first time handling a TP unit all on your own early in your career. Fresh into HUL and I think just out of ITC?What a great acceleration from that time.
