The Mesmerizing World Of The Sea | Leadership Lessons I Learnt From Scuba Diving

Adventure & Leadership

As I recall the beautiful sight of mesmerizing bubbles rising to the sea surface with each breath, it feels like it was just yesterday. I obtained my Open Water Scuba Certification in 2016, and it has provided me with countless opportunities to approach challenges from various angles and think outside the box. The experience has taught me to be creative and adaptable in any situation. Join me as I share the fascinating parallels between scuba diving and my leadership journey!

  1. Preparation is the Key: Preparation is critical when diving into the deep waters of new projects and ventures. Like diving, where rigorous training is necessary to ensure safety and success, thorough preparation is vital in every endeavour. In the corporate world, we often undervalue the importance of preparation and initiate meetings and discussions to figure things out on the fly. While this may seem cool and work sometimes, a lack of preparation can lead to missed opportunities and costly mistakes. Hence, prioritizing preparation gives us the edge we need to succeed.
  2. Always Be Learning & Practicing: As professionals, we strive to be the best in our fields. However, the key to success is always to continue learning and practising. Just like how scuba divers undergo multiple controlled dives in a pool before taking a real-time dip, we, too, must continuously learn and practice our skills to become better leaders. This means expanding our skill sets, staying updated with industry trends, and investing in personal growth. Staying ahead of the game is essential in today's ever-evolving professional landscape.
  3. One for All, All for One (Collaboration & Team Work): The underwater world is thrilling and perilous. It's a place where humans can only survive with proper equipment, skills, and support. Scuba divers have mastered the art of communication through sign language, honing their ability to sense each other's security and take action to protect fellow divers from harm. This highlights the importance of showing care, compassion, and service to others without expecting anything in return. The power of teamwork is immeasurable and should never be underestimated.
  4. Develop Comfort With Ambiguity: Scuba divers who fearlessly dive into uncharted waters. Like them, we should venture into the unknown and leave our comfort zones. The art of diving teaches us to face our fears, adapt to new environments, and push our limits. By embracing this mindset, we can uncover hidden opportunities that can take our personal and professional growth to new heights. Embracing ambiguity can be difficult, but it's a crucial skill to help us navigate complex problems more effectively. So, how can we develop comfort with ambiguity? It all starts with acknowledging that not everything can be neatly resolved, and that's okay. We need to learn to be comfortable with uncertainty and be willing to explore multiple possibilities. With practice, we can become better equipped to make informed decisions despite unclear situations.
  5. Adaptability & Agility: Exploring the underwater world requires adaptability and agility. Divers must remain flexible and open-minded as they navigate an unpredictable environment filled with various species. Although they may have a plan and strategy, conditions can change instantly, forcing them to think on their feet and adapt to unexpected situations. This skill set is invaluable in business, where adaptability is crucial for success. By embracing change and cultivating resilience, we position ourselves as agile professionals who can thrive in dynamic and uncertain circumstances. So, let's take a page from the divers' playbook and be ready to pivot to Plan B, C, or even D on the go.
  6. Optimum Utilization of Resources: As divers, we are taught to use our resources carefully and efficiently. An open-water certified diver using a standard aluminium 80-cubic-foot tank on a 40-foot dive can stay down for 45 to 60 minutes with a safe reserve of air left in the tank. This requires constant monitoring and careful utilization of the precious resource of breathable air underwater. The lesson of optimal resource utilization applies to diving, life, and leadership. We must stay equipped and use our resources effectively to achieve our goals successfully.
  7. Healthy Boundaries with Nature: As divers, we abide by rules emphasizing respecting nature. We are taught to keep our distance from sea animals and refrain from taking anything from the sea. Our mere presence in their world can be overwhelming for these creatures, so we must maintain healthy and respectful boundaries with nature. This lesson holds for leaders as well. With power comes great responsibility, and it's crucial to understand and respect the boundaries of those around us. As leaders, we make decisions that have a significant impact on the lives of our team members. It's vital to uphold their individuality and treat them with the same respect that we do for nature. By doing so, we become influential leaders and responsible and empathetic human beings.
  8. Connecting With Yourself: The underwater world may appear silent at first, but once submerged, you'll hear your own breath and even your own heartbeat if you listen closely. It's a unique and meditative experience that allows you to be alone with your thoughts and emotions. Diving provides an excellent opportunity for self-discovery and self-awareness. Listening to your inner chatter can help develop a sense of self-awareness and build a deep connection with yourself. By seeing your thoughts from a distance without responding to any, you can learn to understand who you are. And "Who you are is how you Lead, Coach, Mentor, Guide and Direct others" Through diving, we learn the importance of knowing ourselves better.
  9. Overcoming Fears: This is my favourite. Have you ever experienced the rush of transitioning from a pool to the vastness of the ocean? It can be daunting, but conquering your fears and taking that leap of faith is truly exhilarating. This experience has taught me a valuable life lesson - to have the courage to take the first step, even when we feel unprepared or uncertain. Just like the roll-over jump from the boat into the ocean, taking that first step is crucial, and the rest falls into place gradually. So, whenever faced with a new challenge or situation, remind yourself of the excitement and triumph you would have felt after overcoming your fears. This courage will propel you forward to embrace the unknown with open arms.

Have you ever found inspiration in unexpected places? I have, and one of the surprising sources of wisdom for me has been SCUBA diving. The lessons I've learned underwater have helped me navigate many situations in life. Hope, sharing some of these insights will be helpful for you, too. Medhika Sood Brilliant article! I can imagine the experience and excitement of entering an alien world… I picked up two things: *Adaptability & Agility: * a) Intellectual humility - a must for agility b) Our beliefs should not become part of our identity…it may inhibit our progress… *Preparation is the Key: * a) Rigour of evidence should prevail over first-instinct fallacy… b) Overcome ‘cognitive laziness’
