Adventure deficit at work

Most of my friends in Information Technology(IT) have hit a dead end, where they are bored to death with their routine work schedule.

They are clear, they want to do something outside of IT. But, most of them very rarely take action to do anything beyond. Not to blame them, but most of them are addicted to routine job and monthly pay check.

If i had not taken entrepreneurship, may be i would have been at the same place. Life changed, after i quit my full time job at Yahoo! and started a Technology Consulting startup. My Startup gave a great exposure in domain knowledge, while working with customers from varied industry background - Scuba Diving, Training, Financial Advisors, Insurance Advisors, Innovation consulting, Market Research, Recruitment Consulting, Health Care etc.

Motivational speaker  Jim Rohn famously said that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with.

We can gain more exposure, when we observe/talk/meet people from different background either by -

  • Joining different groups (not just IT) in LinkedIn, Facebook.
  • Volunteering for a Cause.
  • By attending Meetups / Events.
  • Taking different functional roles at Job.
  • Taking a different roles in the same company.
  • Taking on Entrepreneurship
  • Reading entrepreneur stories and reaching out to them.
  • Experimenting on your idea.
