Advantages of Moving to a Dark Theme
Textual content is clear
I have learned while making presentation that a light color text on dark background makes it more clear and easy to read, provided you pick the correct font for the text. Our travel guide page is an example of the same, where are user landed to read more about the a destination so it supposed to be highly reader friendly.
Easy to read in low lights
Another point that adds to a web page being mobile friendly or not is the readability in low. The simple reason being, mobile audience tend use it most during nights. The dark theme webpages gives a good contrast to read in low lights that does not pushes the brightness into readers eyes.
Images looks really colourful and bright
Human eye sees an image as 30% more bright and colourful when it is placed on black background rather than white.
The area around your image is a light source (either emitted, or reflected). If the surrounding area is white, your iris will close slightly to accommodate the excess light. Your will perceive the image as darker than it actually is because your iris is a little too closed.
If the surrounding area is black, your iris will open up slightly to accommodate the lack of light. You will perceive the image as brighter than it actually is because your iris is a little too open.
Highlight important content
On a white background you tend to restrict yourself with dark colours to highlight, which turns out to look similar dark shades. While using a dark background, you have wide spectrum of colours to use to highlight the headings and important text with bright and light shades of colors.
Using white text on a dark background as a highlighting tool is a smart way to call out text that users scan. You can catch the attention and make the most of the small attention span of your users.
You never see that unused white space
On lighter backgrounds we tend to avoid the unused white space on a web page. The dark theme layouts does solve this design problem without much of efforts.
On darker background the unused space does not reflect any light into the eyes, users will always get the sense of content thickness. It will not take away the space from the web page, it just changes the way user perceives that page. The web page will not look empty.
