The Advantages of Customerizing Every Presentation

The Advantages of Customerizing Every Presentation

Imagine sitting in the audience, listening to a speaker who not only understands your industry, but also speaks your language. Every example resonates, every bit of humor hits home, and you feel like the presentation was crafted just for you. This is the power of customerization[1]—tailoring your presentation to fit the specific audience in front of you. The goal isn’t to rewrite everything but to strategically adjust portions of your talk to align with the audience’s unique challenges, preferences, and interests. This approach has numerous advantages that can elevate your speaking career and increase the impact of your message.

Engage Your Audience Like Never Before

A generic presentation may get polite applause, but a customized one will spark genuine engagement. When you weave in industry-specific jargon or reference common pain points, your audience sits up and listens. They recognize themselves in your stories, and that sense of relevance keeps them hooked.

Humor is another tool that can transform an audience from passive listeners to active participants. Tailored humor related to industry challenges, whether it's a funny anecdote from your pre-event interviews or a witty observation about a common problem, breaks the ice and keeps the energy high. And by incorporating interactive elements—such as polling the audience or getting them involved in group activities—you take engagement a step further. The more you involve the audience, the more they remember.

Build Credibility and Trust

Tailoring your presentation signals that you’ve done your homework. It shows you’re not just recycling a talk you’ve delivered dozens of times before. You’ve taken the time to understand their world, and that effort pays off in credibility.

When people see that you’ve taken the time to learn about their industry, they’re more likely to trust your insights. It also creates a connection. You’re not just a speaker; you’re someone who gets it. This trust paves the way for your key messages to land with greater impact.

Stand Out from the Competition

In the crowded speaking industry, differentiation is everything. Many speakers deliver well-rehearsed, but ultimately generic presentations. While these may get the job done, it’s the custom-tailored presentations that are truly memorable. The 80/20 rule works wonders—80% of your content can stay consistent, but by customerizing just 20%, the entire presentation feels unique, even though the core message remains intact. This approach makes your audience feel like the whole talk was crafted just for them, allowing you to maintain the integrity of your material while giving the impression of a bespoke experience.

Achieve the Outcomes That Matter

Most event planners aren’t just looking to fill seats; they want to achieve specific outcomes. Whether it's inspiring a change in mindset, increasing productivity, or sparking innovation, the more your presentation aligns with the event’s goals, the more likely those outcomes will be realized.

Customized presentations increase the chances of your audience taking action. The message hits harder when they can see themselves in the examples you provide. Tailored content is more likely to drive the results the organizer is looking for, which, in turn, increases the likelihood of being invited back for future events.

Forge Stronger Connections with the Audience

One of the most powerful aspects of customerizing your presentation is the emotional connection it creates. When you share stories or examples from the audience’s world, you’re not just delivering information; you’re creating shared experiences. That fosters a sense of community within the room and helps you establish a deeper connection with the group.

Emotional engagement makes your presentation more memorable. When people feel something—whether it’s laughter, surprise, or a sense of shared struggle—they’re more likely to retain your message.

Add Value for Event Organizers

Customization doesn’t just benefit the audience; it’s also a value-add for the event organizer. A presentation that feels personal leads to higher attendee satisfaction, and event organizers want to be known for providing that kind of experience. Your willingness to customerize your talk makes it easier for them to justify your fee, and often, that level of commitment can secure future bookings.

You can also leverage your customerizations for future opportunities. After the event, review the recording of your talk and tally up how many references and examples were specific to the audience. Sharing that data with future prospects can help you demonstrate the extra value you bring, further differentiating you from other speakers.

Grow Personally and Professionally

Customerizing your presentations doesn’t just benefit your audience—it helps you grow, too. By researching different industries and tailoring your content to various audiences, you continually expand your knowledge. This keeps your material fresh and allows you to appeal to a broader range of clients.

Engaging with audience members before and after the event provides valuable feedback. You’ll learn what resonates, what falls flat, and how to refine your content for the next gig. Each event becomes a learning opportunity, fueling your growth as a speaker.

Increase Your Sales and Marketing Potential

In a competitive market, offering a customerized talk can be the edge that gets you the gig. When event organizers have to choose between a high-profile speaker delivering a generic talk and you—who is willing to tailor your message to their audience—they may lean toward the one who offers the most relevant experience.

Building relationships with event organizers through personalized interactions also increases your chances of getting referrals and repeat engagements. They’ll appreciate the extra effort you put into customizing your presentation, and that appreciation can translate into more business.

Conclusion

Customerizing your presentation isn’t just about swapping out a few slides or throwing in a relevant joke. It’s a strategic approach that boosts engagement, builds trust, and delivers real value to both your audience and event organizers. By investing time to tailor your message using humor, industry-specific references, visual aids, and interactive elements, you create a unique experience that stands out from the crowd.

In the end, customerization doesn’t just enhance your presentation—it enhances your career. The extra effort pays off in stronger connections, more satisfied clients, and a growing reputation as a speaker who goes above and beyond. And that’s an advantage worth pursuing.

[1] A neologism popularized by several authors starting in the early 1990’s discussing mass customization of products. Here we are using it to describe customizing a presentation for a specific audience.

Great tip, Bob. Customization and some good metaphors that resonate with the audience (and a little wit) have made for the best presentations for even difficult technical presentations I had to give to lawyers on aeroengine design. AND they recalled the content much batter! Thanks for this!

Bob Roitblat You are so right. In my keynoting days I learned how to customize byt interviewing leaders, and the real people. Also, mystery shopping, becoming a customer, going to work for the client for a day in the more blue collar roles, integrating what the executives and other speakers said into my talk. I loved doing it.
