The Advantage of an Education

I needed an assistant a few years ago. I received 112 resumes. I rejected 89 due to spelling and other obvious errors. Another few because the applicants wanted me to teach them to be my competition. Others because they were under or over qualified, or because they had to travel (it was a part time job). I picked the final resumes and had my wife (a retired RN with a great eye for detail) pick three for (us) to interview. She liked all three. One was very gregarious, and I knew we'd get along, but little work would be done. One reminded me of my deceased aunt when she was angry, and I couldn't deal with that on a daily (or other) basis. The last one was one who said little, very conservative and a local single mother. She worked with me for four years until her kids were out of the local school and she moved, wanting to be closer to her family.
If the 89 with errors had taken the time to double check their spelling and other errors, the applicant pool would have been larger. As my grandfather told me many times, the one thing that cannot be taken from a person is their education. I just wish more people would take advantage of that ability to better themselves.
