Advancing the Kingdom’s booming entertainment and tourism sectors

Saudi Arabia’s tourism and entertainment sectors have witnessed a tremendous overhaul since the launch of Vision 2030. With the aim of diversifying the economy and improving quality of life, the Saudi government is transforming the Kingdom into a major global hub and creating unprecedented opportunities in tourism and entertainment.

Reflecting Saudi Arabia’s remarkable transformation, the entertainment sector has achieved impressive growth over the past five years. In addition to the 2,189 new licenses, 1,809 new permits, and more than 2,500 events hosted by 2021, the sector saw the creation of more than 100,000 jobs across the 1,000+ companies working in entertainment. Moreover, the tremendous success of Saudi Seasons indicates the strong demand for leisure and amusement. A demand that the General Entertainment Authority seeks to address by investing $64 billion by 2028.

One of the biggest entertainment investments in the Kingdom today is the Qiddiya project. Planned to be the world’s largest entertainment city, almost three times the size of Walt Disney World, the giga-project will feature over 300 leisure and entertainment facilities, including a 20,000-seat clifftop stadium, motorsports facilities, the world’s largest Six Flags theme park, a world-class waterpark, golf courses, cinemas, and a performing arts theatre. The Qiddiya project will play a key role in bolstering the Saudi entertainment sector, which is expected to be worth $1.17 billion by 2030.

On the tourism front, Saudi Arabia plans to attract more than 100 million annual tourists by 2030. To this end, the Kingdom has undertaken multiple initiatives including the introduction of the e-visa system for residents of 49 nations, the opening of its UNESCO World Heritage Sites, building resorts on the Red Sea coast, and launching a cruise line. Another major step in turning the Kingdom into a world-class touristic destination is the launch of the new Tourism Development Fund by the Ministry of Tourism. The fund is set to invest up to $4 billion into boosting the Saudi tourism industry.
