Advancing health innovation

The healthcare industry, like virtually every industry out there, is in the midst of major transformation. New legislation and oversight, new delivery options and patient expectations, and new technologies are creating challenges for healthcare providers around the world. But they are also opening the door to huge opportunity.
I've seen the upside of this transformation in my own hometown – Austin, Texas. When I started Dell in 1984, Austin was best known for the University of Texas, live music, and the Texas State Capitol (in that order). Today, Austin is considered the Silicon Valley of the Southwest with a robust tech sector and a reputation for innovation. In recent years, a lot of that innovation has been in the life sciences, resulting in a thriving subset of the local economy -- biotech, new digital health, medical technology, etc.
Through the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, we have worked closely with the health community to foster innovation and investment. Our mission is to put children and families first, and we've taken it global with significant programs in India and Africa. We've also focused intensely in our home community of Central Texas, where to date we've invested more than $168 million in research facilities, public health programs, and pediatric hospital capacity.
The University of Texas has been a fantastic partner in our efforts, and recently, we've helped make possible a new medical school at UT. When it opens in 2016, Dell Medical School will be the first new medical school to open in the United States in 25 years, and it will usher in a whole new era of innovation in Austin and beyond as it seeks to redefine medical education.
Today, I'm excited to announce on LinkedIn that our foundation has committed an additional $25 million to Seton Healthcare Family to establish the Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas. This teaching hospital combined with the new Dell Medical School will be a center of excellence and innovation for family health and research.
If you are a Texas alumni, I hope you’ll take a few minutes to learn more about the progress the University is making and how you can help.
If you’re in the medical profession or want to be, this is news you can use. Join us in Austin. I can tell you from personal experience, it’s a place where new ideas become reality.

9 年I would like to see us focus more on Primary Prevention. The research is clear that we have effective ways that prevent disparate impact, that reduce incidence of chronic diseases and delay death while remaining healthy but they are not being implemented because they reduce revenue--they aren't pills and they reduce the need for treatment of symptoms.
