Advancing Family-Centered Care in Ukraine: Celebrating a Four-Year Partnership with USAID

In August 2020, we entered a transformational four-year partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development ( USAID ) to expand health care services for families and children in Ukraine.

RMHC secured $6.07 million in funding for RMHC Ukraine, successfully matching the grant through direct financial contributions and in-kind donations. The partnership was structured around key milestones, with each grant portion associated with specific deliverables that RMHC met throughout the partnership.

Working closely with RMHC Ukraine and USAID, we significantly broadened the understanding of family-centered care across Ukraine’s health system, expanded services available to children and their families across Ukraine, increased capacity to support families during the hospitalization of their children, and deepened community engagement in Ukraine.

Over the course of four years, we:

  • Enhanced professional development for RMHC Ukraine staff and volunteers, ensuring excellence at every level, including financial sustainability and program operations.
  • Promoted family-centered care nationwide through educational initiatives and annual conferences, which have become vital resources for 27,000+ healthcare professionals and families.
  • Developed and implemented a 360 family-centered care public awareness campaign, making 29 million contacts through paid and social television and online promotion.

  • Laid the groundwork for the first Ronald McDonald House program in Ukraine at Kyiv’s National Children’s Specialized Hospital, which will provide 18,250 nights of care to families each year.
  • Served over 5,600 families at the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Rivne Regional Children’s Hospital since its opening in 2022.
  • Supported Ukrainian families and healthcare providers since the outbreak of the war, including repurposing Ronald McDonald Family Room programs to house hospital staff and delivering critical medical supplies to hospitals across Ukraine.

We extend our deepest gratitude for our partners at USAID and our dedicated team at RMHC Ukraine for an incredible partnership. Together, we have advanced our mission to provide essential services that remove barriers, strengthen families, and promote healing when children need healthcare.
