Advancing in a different direction ...
Joseph Carter
Executive Advisor / Strategy / Change Management / Operations Improvement / Entrepreneurial Innovation
I’ve decided to advance in a different direction. After teaching Executive MBA’s and MBA’s over a span of approximately 14 years at Xavier University’s Williams College of Business and at Mount St. Joseph University’s School of Business, I’ve decided to re-focus my attention exclusively on management consulting. I have over 10 years management consulting experience in both North America and Europe and I’ve also provided consulting advice to hundreds of entrepreneurs. Throughout my teaching career I’ve designed and taught approximately 30 different business courses in the areas of: (1) Leadership Development; (2) Strategic Management; (3) Entrepreneurship; (4) Operations and Project Management; and (5) Management and Organizational Behavior. I’ve even taught a business course to a group of Doctor of Psychology students, while at Xavier University.
APPRECIATION: There are four people to which I would like to express my sincere appreciation for providing the opportunity for me to teach at these two local universities.
In the summer of 2009 and the fall of 2010, the four people listed below provided the opportunity for me to teach in Xavier University’s Williams College of Business. The first course I taught at XU was focused on strategy, as will be the last course that I am currently teaching at Mt. St. Joseph University.
Jamal Rashed, Ph.D (Professor of Economics, Mount St. Joseph University, https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/jamalrashed/) - Dr. Rashed opened the door to both XU and MSJU (first, as an adjunct in 2014 and then as a full-time member of the faculty in 2017).
Raghu Tadepalli, Ph.D. (Dean, Martha and Spender Love School of Business, Elon University https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/raghu-tadepalli-9150557/) In the spring of 2009, Dr. Raghu Tadepalli was the Assistant Dean of the Williams College of Business. He extended an invitation to me to teach in the Executive MBA Program and I readily accepted. I taught in the Executive MBA Program from 2009 to 2017. Two times I was honored by the Executive MBA’s as the Professor of the Year.
Hema Krishnan, Ph.D., (Board Chair-SOTENI International, Strategy & Global Business- Professor https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/hema-krishnan-ph-d-5950ab13/ ) Hema, was the Chair of the Management and Entrepreneurship Department at the time and she had the final say as to whether I would be hired on full-time.
Ali Malekzadeh, Ph.D. (President at Roosevelt University - https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/ali-malekzadeh-552b6370/) was the Dean of the Williams’s College of Business in 2010. He presented me with an opportunity to be the founding Director of the Xavier Launch-Business program, which connected entrepreneurs to the business expertise of the business faculty, our MBA’s and our extensive network of alumni. I was the Director of XLAB through 2017. Ali was a pleasure to serve – he is creative, action-oriented, and he freely expresses appreciation.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Listed below are some of my most significant accomplishments, along with some endorsements.
EXECUTIVE MBA PROGRAM – Xavier University, Williams College of Business:
Strategic Management: Co-developed and launched an executive-level strategic management course offering with Lou Terhar (see below). The course was structured to provide the EMBA’s with the opportunity to fill the role as external strategy consultants. They were formed into consulting teams, met with the executives of a partner business, and then conducted real-time strategic intelligence gathering to assess the partner company’s current strategy. Afterwards, they developed and proposed alternative business-level strategies to the company executives. In addition to assessing and developing strategies the EMBA’s were coached on their strengths, leadership tendencies, and their interpersonal flaws as a means to improve their leadership effectiveness.
ENDORSEMENTS:
Lou Terhar (Partner and Strategist at Ingeniumplus Holdings LLC – https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/louis-terhar-8498455/): “I have worked with Joe at Xavier University’s Williams College of Business, first as his professor in global strategic management and then as a partner to coach executives on how to collaboratively assess, develop and execute strategic plans that drive significant business impact. He has a rare combination of business acumen, the ability to communicate complex concepts in a straightforward manner, and an authentic style that fosters decisive action all of which makes him uniquely qualified to help your executive team develop and execute business and operational strategies.”
Thomas Schwieterman, MD MBA (Chief Medical Officer, Vice President Clinical Affairs Midmark Corporation – (https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/thomas-schwieterman-md-mba-6131a59/) “Joe is what every student looks for in a masters-level instructor - he is extremely knowledgeable about the world of business, he is engaging in the classroom, provocative when appropriate or necessary, and most importantly, personally aware of how the students are experiencing him at all times. More than any other instructor, Joe became 'one with the class' and engendered a safe and supportive environment for our class to challenge him, each other, and even ourselves. If you find yourself with the opportunity to take one of his classes or work with him as a colleague, I urge you to take advantage of it.”
Kristen Wevers (Senior Vice President, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at UC Health - https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/kristen-wevers-9b03756/) “It is my pleasure to endorse Joe as an exceptional leader, coach, and educator. He was my professor within the executive MBA program at Xavier University and his pragmatic, insightful, proven executive experience enhanced the richness of our learning and practical application of real-world business situations; his proven strategic thinking and analysis expertise pushed our thinking and learning. He proved to be an exceptional coach to each of us, regardless of our experiences and functional roles. Importantly, he is a role model in terms of his ethics, values and compassion for others -- his IQ and EQ skills were equally evident in all our interactions and conversations; he is an outstanding person who possesses exceptional business prowess -- and is a fine human being.”
EXECUTIVE MBA PROGRAM – Xavier University, Williams College of Business:
Entrepreneurship: Developed and launched a course offering that provided the Executive MBA’s the opportunity to work in teams as small-business consultants. Their clients were the owners of small businesses located in Cincinnati. The EMBA’s partnered with the business owners to assess their current value proposition and business model. Then they developed and proposed disruptive business models to each of the business owners.
ENDORSEMENT:
Andrew Benzinger (Business Development Manager at AutoStore - https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/andrew-benzinger-mba-b0552a7/) “I am writing to express my appreciation and gratitude from my very positive experience with the Xavier University Executive MBA Program. Specifically, Joe Carter’s class and his process changed my life. Let me explain a little bit about what I mean by that. His class introduced us to small business and the hurdles that come with surviving and scaling. Joe’s extensive background and nontraditional approach gave my team and myself the opportunity to see outside the classroom and get our hands dirty with more than just a textbook. The incredible value that we brought to our company was a direct result of Joe’s efforts. I personally was able to make a lasting connection with my company. This experience re-energized me in my ongoing quest to better myself as a person as a student of the business world. The company deployed many of our points in our growth plan so much that I was hired a year later to run that division. The suggestions from our class consulting project has already resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in profit for the company inside of 24 months. The owner of the company is forever grateful of Xavier and the value that the class and project brought to his business and his life. The experiential learning component of the program is what initially drew me to Xavier. I didn’t foresee that it would completely change my life for the better.”
XAVIER LAUNCH-A-BUSINESS – Xavier University, Williams College of Business
In 2010, I led the development and launch of XLAB, which provided entrepreneurs throughout the region with 15 (3-hour) business classes. The entrepreneurs also had the opportunity to compete for the chance to have a business advisor assigned to them and a team of 4 to 5 MBA’s to help them for an entire semester – all at no charge. Over a 7-year period, the XLAB program provided business expertise to hundreds of entrepreneurs located throughout the region. The XLAB classes were taught by business faculty and members of the entrepreneurship community, such as the Queen City Angels (https://www.qca.com/our-members/) and Dismore (https://www.dinsmore.com/april-l-besl/). The XLAB program was, and is, the only program that simultaneously connected the Williams College of Business administration, faculty, Executive MBA’s, MBA’s, undergraduates, alumni, and members of the business community on one common initiative.
ENDORSEMENT:
Bobby Stankov, RPH, MBA (Founder at DIYSolar - https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/bobbystankov/) “Xavier’s XLAB (Launch-A-Business) has a special place in my personal and professional development. I learned a lot there - from conducting consulting assignments to organizing events, interviewing small businesses and ultimately being part of some of them. I can proudly say that I was Joe’s first Graduate Assistant for the XLAB. He was an integral person in my development there. From teaching me how to analyze a process by breaking it down to its components, to leading me through the steps of starting a business, Joe has been my most trusted mentor - and still is! Joe, was my advisor when I ventured into the StartUp world with ScopiaRx. He supported me when I kicked off my first business TelaEx and stayed in touch through my development at CVS. Joe was there to wish me luck and share some words of wisdom over a cup of coffee days before I made the move to Denver, CO. I am lucky to have you on my side!”
MBA PROGRAM – Xavier University, Williams College of Business:
In 2011, I developed, launched, and recruited MBA's into a Small Business Consulting course that I taught. In that course the MBA’s learned about consulting via my experiences as a consultant, along with the application of Peter Block’s (Member at Common Good Collective – https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/peter-block-238848a/) Flawless Consulting and David A. Fields' (Consulting Firm Expert | Consultant | Author | Speaker | Advisor to Boutique Consulting Firms and Solo Practitioners – https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/davidafields/), The Executive’s Guide to Consultants. I want to thank both Peter Block and David A. Fields for graciously being guest speakers in this course on more than one occasion. The most significant benefit the MBA’s experienced in this course was to select their Xavier Launch-a-Business entrepreneur client and then gain real-life experience operating as a consulting team to serve a real client.
ENDORSEMENTS:
Ben Matthews (https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/benmatthews1/) “Over the past 3+ years I have had the privilege of working with Joe in a few different capacities. I first met Joe through my MBA work at Xavier University where he was teaching Small Business Consulting and working on a start-up I was interested in helping as well. Eventually, I became a Principal in that business – Waterfields (https://waterfieldsllc.com/) . Throughout the last three years whenever we face tough questions as dynamic and evolving young business the Waterfields team always go back to the lessons that Joe taught us on how to prioritize and clearly define our goals. I have watched Joe masterfully lead business planning sessions by engaging the involved parties through pointed questions which drive to the heart of the real decision to be made. Anyone who has been involved with a fast-paced start-up knows how valuable it is to have someone like Joe on your team who can bring clarity of thought to everyone involved. I also had the opportunity to take Joe's small business consulting course as part of my MBA studies. The lesson plan set out by Joe enabled me to directly apply the principles of external consulting to a real-life business I was part of. Whether in my role as a Principal of Waterfields, or a Regulatory Affairs Manager at P&G I find myself going back to those lessons of how to define the problems, deal with internal or external resistance, and remaining authentic in my personal approach to the work. Joe's course is among an elite few from my MBA that truly provides skills I use daily. Most of all though, I am proud to say that I have got to know Joe personally over the years and I am proud to call him a friend. I wholeheartedly recommend you work with Joe for any consulting needs you may have.
Matt Woods, MBA (Chief Executive Officer and President of the Charter Committee of Greater Cincinnati – https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/matt-woods-mba-b6aa3044/) “I had the pleasure of taking Professor Carter's classes on two occasions and a special work study through my MBA program at Xavier. Joe's real-world experience as a consultant was able to greatly help enhance the value of his teaching. His small business consulting course and his management training really helped shape me while attending Xavier. I was able to take several of the books he recommended and taught to the class and bring it back to my organization for executive coaching and leadership pipeline development. Joe brings a knowledge set that brings the real world to the class room and his acumen for entrepreneurship and consulting really made it fun to be a part. I highly recommend Joe as both a professor but also as a consultant on any business project.
EXECUTIVE MBA PROGRAM – Mount St. Joseph University
Developed and launched an Executive Education program focused on leadership and operations. The initial clients included members of a first-responder organization and a food-processor business. The leadership courses were comprised of (2) 5-week sessions at 3-hours each. The operations management course was comprised of (15) 1-hour sessions.
CLIENT ENDORSEMENTS:
Leadership development: “I actually took something away from each of the five sessions that will help me in my life.”
Operations management: “Our instructor was great, easy to follow the topics in all 15 classes. Also, had a great attitude and you can tell he loves to teach. We are ready to put the tools into action and to work with others on projects to improve our company. “
I’ve enjoyed the last 14-years of my career helping approximately 2000 business-students and hundreds of entrepreneurs. One piece of advice I've tried to pass along to whomever I helped - condition yourself to learn rapidly and apply what you learn - don't be afraid that you will make mistakes - we all do - learn from your mistakes - adjust and keep going - the desire for perfection will only prevent you from moving closer to what you are capable of becoming.
My next adventure awaits … look for a formal announcement in May!
