The historic Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passed by Congress and signed by President Biden in November, 2021, marks a turning point for transitioning the nation's electrical grid towards a future of decarbonization, resiliency, and electrification of other sectors such as transportation. Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), today much more than automated meter reading, will be a key component of this initiative by aggregating multiple benefits related to grid modernization, integrated communications, and resiliency, amongst other areas.

Utilities that have yet to deploy AMI, or that have deployed AMI but are ready to upgrade their system to capitalize on additional benefits, may be able to receive funding through the IIJA to help with the costs of deploying their systems. The primary funding mechanism for AMI is found in Section 40107 of the IIJA and will be administered through the existing Smart Grid Investment Matching Grant Program (SGIP). The IIJA will add an additional $3B to the SGIP for fiscal years 2022 to 2026 and will fund up to 50% of eligible costs.
