The Advanced Materials Show Connectivity Series: Defense

The Advanced Materials Show Connectivity Series: Defense

The biggest industries can sometimes be the most hidden. Defense is not something actively on most people’s mind’s day to day but something that is all around us constantly. The global defense industry revenue is just shy of $2 trillion dollars per year and is expected to grow 2.8% in 2021, crossing that threshold. The US contributes a significant portion of this, at over $700 billion dollars, with this being the second-largest allocation of the government budget, just behind social security. Macroeconomic trends have been a key player in the evolving nature of the defense industry including green/clean energy, R&D cost-sharing and policy/law changes. It is safe to say that defense plays an integral role in the US economy but how do advanced materials play into this?

Advanced materials are the foundation of modern military applications with next-generation manufacturing coming out of the woodwork. We are seeing advanced robotics which is helping boost efficiency, provide solutions to safety issues and reduce cost. Lightweighting is coming to the forefront with companies seeking lightweight but resilient and high-strength materials that can enhance or be integrated into existing developments including military uniforms, aircrafts and vehicles.

Three of the largest defense companies in the world Lockheed Martin, Raytheon Technologies and Boeing are based in North America alongside Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems. The US remains a global superpower when it comes to defense development and in 2021 we have seen the following:??

  • A £135 million contract awarded to BAE Systems for their Typhoon fighter jet programme. This will enable them to investigate improving its internal technology and defense systems.
  • A $60 million investment into Hermeus Corporation to create the world’s first reusable hypersonic aircraft by the the U.S. Air Force and capital firms.
  • A manned-unmanned test took place for the first time by Boeing and the U.S Navy of it’s MQ-25A Stingray. This demonstration proved that it is viable to conduct commands remotely and adjust to changes in flight.

The Advanced Materials Show USA is a dedicated show for end users, product developers, OEM’s and the entire material manufacturing supply chain. Those who visit will have a shared focus on seeking the latest materials, innovations and technology and will find new products, suppliers and partners all under one roof. Featured exhibitors include IA Coatings leading the performance and protective coatings industry, IA Coatings is your unsurpassed choice for performance coatings application. As a Veteran owned and operated Small Business (VOSB), their team has accumulated over 50 years of experience in the industry.
