Most UK manufacturers (70%) believe that a long-term industrial strategy for the nation could lead to a surge in offshore manufacturing being brought back to the UK, according to a new survey published by Make UK and RSM UK. Just 3% say such a strategy would make no difference to the likelihood of re-shoring, with a mere 1% of them saying it would make no difference to their businesses. The survey, which was carried out before the Government’s recent announcement of an industrial strategy Green Paper, also suggests that half of UK manufacturers would increase investment in their UK facilities in response to a new strategy, 30% would adopt more automation, 29% would boost exports to the EU, while 26% would raise their R&D budgets. Make UK estimates that if manufacturing’s contribution to GDP were to rise to 15%, it would add £142bn to the economy. These figures are impressive, but whether they become a reality depends on the details of the new strategy.
The UK government has identified advanced manufacturing as one of eight key sectors that its industrial strategy – the first new one for seven years – will focus on in…

Designing to meet today’s smart manufacturing needs can yield complex systems that are difficult to operate and support. What if there was a way to simplify your machine designs while making them more flexible and easier to use? By using On-Machine? solutions by Rockwell Automation, all this and more is now possible. The On-Machine? solutions feature a modular, decentralized design that allows automation components to be field-mounted rather than kept in large electrical enclosures. This approach enables more simplified, modular machines with a smaller footprint, lower total costs, and faster time to operation, helping industries enhance productivity, quality, and sustainability.”

For pharmaceutical, food and beverage companies, chlorine removal from process water supplies is essential to the quality of end products. Accurate monitoring of activated carbon filters requires precision data, but this should not be compromised by a need for frequent recalibration and maintenance. Bürkert’s OALAB Type 8906 water analysis system is the answer.
Replacing traditional colorimetric analysers and amperometric sensors, Bürkert’s solution offers a T90 time of just 30 seconds. Its chlorine sensor requires greatly reduced maintenance and recalibration and can be complemented by a range of sensors to measure water quality.
