How to Advance Your Marketing Career By Improving Your English Communication Skills
Mark Chapman MEd
I help marketing & branding professionals advance their careers by improving their English (interviews, meetings & more).
Every marketer needs to communicate clearly.
Unless you can confidently use your English when dealing with international clients and colleagues, you risk losing out to those who can.
But how can you communicate clearly and confidently in English without spending years studying?
Perhaps you’ve read online articles, watched videos, or used language learning apps, but find you’ve not made the progress you want. Or perhaps classes are not working.
What’s the real problem?
The real problem is the approach to learning English that most people choose. Learning English as a language is only the first step. The second step is to practice and polish the English communication skills you need in your job in realistic situations.?
If you practice a sport—any sport—once or twice a week with friends, will you improve?
A little, maybe.
But you won’t reach a professional standard.
If you find a coach who focuses on the exercises and skills you need, and then you practice, will you improve?
Of course!
It’s the same for marketing professionals wishing to advance their career by improving their English communication skills.
The solution
Whether you study with me or not, general English classes (let alone language apps and occasionally reading articles) are not enough. Not unless you want to spend many years studying.
In order to learn English faster (and so advance your marketing career) you need to focus on the language and skills you need in your job in English.
The Program
This is a 10-week program in English communication skills aimed specifically at marketing professionals.?
These are one-to-one classes tailored for you and your situation.?
The program offers two basic elements and three skill sets. This will vary according to your needs, of course.
Before I describe the program, I have a question…
Why is it hard to understand groups of people speaking in English—especially when they become excited and talk quickly?
There are several possible reasons, but two are common and controllable.
The first is a lack of vocabulary. You simply don’t know the words. This is one of the most common problems facing intermediate-advanced learners. It also affects your ability to express yourself clearly.
The second common reason is related to the nature of English.
Unlike some languages, in English, words change their pronunciation when combined.
Many of my students pronounce each individual word very well, but when they combine words into sentences, their pronunciation often becomes unnatural.
I’m not talking about accent. I’m talking about the rhythm of English.

What does pronunciation have to do with understanding groups of people speaking quickly in English?
Once your sentence-level pronunciation becomes more natural, your listening will improve.?
English will appear to slow down.
I’ve seen this happen many times
I cover both these basic elements in my program—as and when needed.?
What about conversation?
I don’t have a separate module on conversation because it’s an integral part of the program—particularly, but not only, in vocabulary development.?
One of the most effective ways to learn vocabulary on a deeper level is to use it in an interesting and meaningful way. Focused mini-conversations form an important part of this program.
Skill Sets
Interview Skills
Would you like a new job in an international company? Do you have an upcoming interview??
You only get one chance to impress the interviewers. Make the best impression you can. The work you put into preparation will pay off for years into the future.?
This course practices typical questions and answers as well as less common questions. We'll also develop storytelling skills essential for showing prospective employers your strengths. By the end of the course, you’ll have a small library of personal and business-related stories to illustrate your skills, experience, and achievements.
We also practice how to negotiate a better salary—a very important, and often neglected, part of interview preparation.
Presentation Skills
We’ll create, practice, and polish your presentations through role-playing actual situations you face in your marketing job.
Business Writing
The cost of poor writing for businesses is high. It creates an unprofessional image, wastes time, and loses money for your business.
This program aims to improve your writing skills in the areas you most need in your marketing job.
MY TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I've spent over thirty years teaching in higher education and businesses in East Asia and Europe. I’ve designed courses, trained teachers, written internationally used course books, and run my own chain of language schools.?
I have an MEd (TESOL) with Distinction as well as other teaching certificates.
Besides teaching, I have a lifelong interest in psychology, which helps inform my program. I also write fiction under a pen name and have published four novels so far.
