Advance to Go. Collect $4.2m! Deconstructing The Block Monopoly promotion

This season of The Block has seen the usual combination of renovation drama + product placement, with the award for most blatant (despite tough competition) going to Nine Network's own The Block themed Monopoly game.

Billed as the "biggest prize ever seen in Australian TV history", one lucky purchaser of the game will win a Block apartment in St Kilda.

Just for fun, I wanted to see how this compares to previous seasons, where Nine Network sell the 'Challenge apartment' and pocket the cash. Here goes (please feel free to let me know of any wrong assumptions or math in the comments)

  • The prize apartment is valued at $2,687,000, handy pocket money for Nine Network if they sold it.
  • The Block Monopoly Game retails for $89.00
  • Sales of the game (and the prize draw) run until the end of this year, but production is limited to 140,000.
  • The Block is one of Australia's most popular shows, with 1.682m viewers on Sunday October 21st. The final episode of 2017 pulled 2.82m viewers. The game has been pushed on every episode for the last month. Let's assume that at least 3.5m viewers have seen the promotion of the game and the grand prize.
  • To sell out of the 140,000 games on offer, about 4% of viewers would need to buy one. This seems realistic, especially when allowing for the xmas gift season coming up (and the game will still be available for sale, and the prize draw still open). I think we can assume that the game will sell out, meaning retail sales of $12,460,000.
  • Naturally channel Nine don't get to take all of this, with revenue to be shared between the retailer, manufacturer / distributor (Imagination Gaming) and the Nine Network.
  • Considering that regular Monopoly games retail for $25.00, there is a huge mark-up on this special edition.
  • For the sake of argument, let's assume that the Nine Network are getting between $20 and $30 per copy sold.
  • At the low end, this would mean getting the same amount of cash as selling the apartment ($2,687,000), and on the high side an additional $1.5m. Wow... kudos to whoever put this deal together!

Not only do Nine Network potentially earn millions more cold hard cash than previous seasons, The Bank Pays a Dividend of a 140,000 person marketing database (a condition of entry) and also a Get Out of Jail Free card with 140,000 Australian households engaging with The Block every time they play Monopoly.

I also think the Monopoly game is a great fit for the show. Promotional genius?

Very similar to the other prize draws I've seen in Aus where you can win a house. I've seen a number of the Lions Clubs in the Gold Coast do this and must make a fortune. A great concept "if" you sell all the tickets.

Hi Tim, liked your tear down of this. Is there any data of what actually played out? Did all the games sell?
