The Adrenaline Trap – Holding Ourselves Back for a Quick Fix

“Your Higher Self is advising you to keep your emotions in check through these times of change and transition.

[…] Change is in the air and the uncertainty at hand is stirring up a lot of anxiety and insecurity. Recognize the potential stress, and choose to brave the volatile storm by remaining cool, calm and collected.

Whatever you do, don’t submit to your own high drama as a way of expending the heightened adrenaline coursing through your veins. Go for a run, or work out at the gym. Use your anxiety physically rather than emotionally”.

 

I have long known that people do anything to feel alive.

Our life force is our life. We want to feel and we want to be more of our natural estate, alive. This is the gift. It is pure spiritual energy that makes us what we are. And although we can’t see it – we only see its physical manifestations – subconsciously, we know that we need energy to stay alive.

There are several ways to gain access to this energy. The one that requires more work is spiritual energy because it demands that we heal ourselves at every level and we shift our vibration from a heavy, manipulative, half-conscious energy to a clean, non-polluting, light energy. In other words, the hardest path becomes eventually the easiest path and the easy way to start with, becomes harder and harder to maintain because it is based on non-truths: those beliefs that say that we are not powerful, that we don’t deserve good things, that we have to struggle through life and that we must be punished for anything that we do wrong, sometimes including having been born! And so on, and so forth.

 

Until humans decide to grow up spiritually and gain access to the unlimited supply of energy that exists in the Universe, we will continue to do those things that help us feel alive, even if, or especially if, it will cause our own energy supply to dwindle as we do the things that disconnect us further and further from our Higher Selves, that divine part of the human being which has access to the Source (or God, or the Universal Mind, or the many other names given to It).

In physical terms, this is translated into doing the things that create a surge of adrenaline. That's to say, creating stress.

Whether in the form of sugary food cravings (immediate boost of energy followed by a fast drop), or fear-based actions (these create the fastest surge of adrenaline in the form of a shock to our system), anything that creates that fast, dramatic response in the body, which is merely translated into stress, is a way to feel alive and in a higher (even if short-lived) state of awareness (or simply the natural flight or fight mechanism of our physical bodies).

I read somewhere that old people love being scared… because it is the only way they have left to feel alive! That really got me thinking…

If we do this on a regular basis, the long-term effect in our bodies is premature ageing as we wear out our organs, which have to work full blast to cope with the high-alert demands imposed in our body, illness and lowered immunity as our immune system can't replenish itself fast enough to cope with the on-going high-speed demand.

Other physical symptoms include excessive fatigue, hyperventilation, dizziness and heart problems as emotional symptoms may create anxiety, rise-and-drop of feelings, emotional swings, depression, nervousness, distraction and others.

I would like to draw the attention of the reader to the similarities between that mentioned above to what Thom Hartmann explains in his book The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight:

Similarity 1    

“For many years, people have been pointing out that we will eventually – and relatively soon – run out of oil”.

If we live on a continuous adrenaline overdrive, we will also, relatively soon, run out of life.

Similarity 2

“The fossil-fuel industry is driven by the common corporate objective of short-term profits, even at the expense of long-term survival”.

Instead of investing heavily in alternative fuel industries, “they are perfectly willing to make billions by selling off – as quickly as possible – a non-renewable source”. Yet, within our individual selves, we also prefer to destroy our bodies and minds over a relatively short period of time rather than investing in spiritual growth and personal development, the link to the only unlimited and renewable personal energy or life force that exists.

Similarity 3

“Lacking oil, we’d be back to the level of productivity we had in 1800 when there were one-sixth as many humans on the planet and our fuel sources were vegetable oil, whale oil, coal and wood. And when productivity plummets, resources become even scarcer. Even a small dislocation in the availability of a primary fuel source can throw an entire nation into disarray […] It is virtually certain that this coming resource imbalance will strain the foundations of democracy, perhaps beyond the breaking point”.

We can't help but wonder about the state of the world whenever we watch or read the news: unbelievable acts of violence among people, actions that when we are at peace with ourselves we can't even envisage.

Why? We are so stressed that anything anybody says or does to us becomes a reason for revenge, holding a grudge, road-rage, abuse of the weaker (children, women, elderly, animals…). The whole fabric of society, the values we believe in seem to disappear when we want to be right (or is it that we need to be right?). If we were more spiritually evolved, we would be able to maintain our centre and balance in the midst of disagreements and would not attach our ego or right to be to discussions, arguments, being right, tension, judgments, criticisms… in one word, we seem to continuously walk on egg-shells when it comes to others. Although this is created by stress, in a vicious circle, this behavior also creates stress.

Why do I bring up these points? Because I want the readers to realize that what happens within the individual (microcosm) is the equivalent of what happens in the bigger world (macrocosm). So unless we can tackle the way we lead our lives, it will be impossible to improve the way we treat others and the earth; that is, the world.

 

In her book Heart of the Christos, Barbara Hand Clow tells us that “The teaching about releasing anger from the emotional body is spreading through the world. We are beginning a time of death, pain and destruction similar to the genocide of the indigenous people, only this time the experience is planetary. Our inner anger is destroying this planet. We all know this, as signaled by the mass cultural movements to let go of addictions – material abuses which enable us to hold anger”.

Not just anger and frustration at our seemingly inability to find happiness and deep fulfillment, but a whole host of other negative emotions that drain us and keep us stuck, preventing us from achieving happiness. But being happy is a very difficult emotion to attain… and we strive to reach it… without really meaning it.

This sounds strange, doesn’t it? It sounds like a contradiction. I really want to be happy! I really mean it! You will say. But think about it:

  •  Being happy requires courage and strength because you will have to look deep within to find what is holding you back from reaching your potential, your magnificent self.
  • Being happy requires a strong backbone, balance and self-discipline because you will have to keep in check all negative thoughts and feelings; you will have to be willing to shift your mind-set and become a positive thinker.
  • Being happy requires that we go through those less-than-desirable emotions, those that we refuse to feel, those that provide us with the cheap and nasty energy that is derived from the illusion of our small ego fighting to control our whole self.
  • Being happy requires high responsibility; yes, responsibility for your feelings and emotions without blaming, judging or criticizing others for making you feel what you feel, act as you act or think as you think.
  • Being happy requires that you love yourself unconditionally and that you have faith in yourself or the Universe (or the Source, or God…) and believe that you are loved beyond measure; that your needs are taken care of regardless of seemingly otherwise circumstances; that you deserve the love, health and abundance that you are striving for, effortlessly (that is, with a childlike quality of innocence or in-nonsense and trust).
  • Being happy requires that you are willing to let go of the low quality, expensive energy, and raise your frequency to that of forgiveness, compassion and tolerance.
  • Being happy requires that you find your self-worth in a way that you trust that your natural gifts will bring you the abundance that you desire, without having to compromise your soul for money in the form of a wage, in a job that you dislike, and so resolving the Prostitute Archetype we all have (see my article: The Challenge of Survival – Healing the Prostitute Archetype).

Looking at it this way, it seems that being happy is a much more difficult vibration to maintain than being miserable and spending our time moaning and complaining; and this is because the work required to shift our energy and behavioral patterns from one to the other is really considerable!

So do yourself a favor, and next time that you need a thrill, look for an argument, or hear your negative inner talk, feel undeserving or inadequate (or any other kind of negative judgment), want to put the world right, change somebody, catch yourself spreading gossip (looking for that instant and short-lived surge of energy that hoarding other people's attention will give you, at the cost of your reputation and self-esteem), watch a horror movie, or want to hit your noisy next-door neighbor… the list goes on and on… check out first your real reasons and ask yourself if you can really pass this time, and so break the pattern.

You may say goodbye to that adrenaline surge, that immediate fix, but you will also say hello at a good and healthy dignity, inner peace and harmony.

Isn’t it worth the try?
