Adoption in Ghana: All you need to Know in 2022

The Adoption Process in Ghana is robust such that the adopter can get discouraged along the way. Nonetheless, it is small acts of love that can transform the world. Garnering over five years of experience in the Child Welfare Space, I have heard people complain a lot about the troubles they go through when they try adopting a child from Ghana.

However, the child you adopt today might be the savior of the world tomorrow. Be inspired.

Over the years, things have changed, and many more foster parents are called to foster children in Ghana. That is the trick many do not know. Starting as a foster parent can give you easy hand access to adopt a child. Please follow?'Lifesong?for orphans' and be inspired by the stories of adopters all over the world.

Organizations in Ghana that can assist you in adopting a child

A couple of organizations in Ghana can assist you in your adoption process; Bethany?Ghana?and the?Family?Based Care Alliance.

This article will walk you through the types of adoption and the adoption processes and criteria. Mind you, this is country-specific, with Ghana as a reference point.

THE ADOPTION PROCESS AND REQUIREMENTS        

We have four types of adoption in Ghana, namely,

  • Foster Care: This is caring for children whose birth parents cannot care for them and whose parental rights have been terminated.
  • Foster-to-Adopt
  • Infant adoption
  • Independent adoption

The adoption process

IN-COUNTRY ADOPTION PROCEDURE

?

  1. Obtain information about the eligibility and suitability of an applicant for adoption and the process etc.
  2. Obtain and complete application forms with police criminal clearance and medical screening report.
  3. Submit to Home Study leading to the preparation of Home Study report on the background and circumstances of the applicant.
  4. Undergo thirty hours of training in adoption-related topics

Requirement

  1. Evidence of Marriage, if applicable
  2. Birth Certificate
  3. Medical / Health Certificate
  4. Police Clearance Report
  5. Evidence of employment/income
  6. Two reference letters
  7. Copy of National Identification
  8. Spousal Consent, if applicable, with the consent of the spouse
  9. Statement of Commitment from two guardians ad litem
  10. In case of relative adoption, proof of relationship with the child
  11. Photographs and audio recordings of the family and home of the applicant

INTER-COUNTRY ADOPTION PROCEDURE

  1. Obtain information about the eligibility and suitability of an applicant to undertake adoption and the adoption process.
  2. Undergo training in adoption-related topics etc
  3. Submit to Home Study leading to the preparation of the Home study report on the background and circumstances of the applicant.
  4. Be approved as eligible and suitable to adopt a child from the receiving State.
  5. The Central Authority or accredited adoption agency of the receiving State submit approval of the home study report to the Central Adoption Authority in Ghana to be approved to undertake adoption in Ghana.
  6. Obtain and complete application forms
