This event provided insight into the new Adobe Digital Publishing Solution, Woodwing’s Inception authoring tool and showcased the use of such with a case study of the National Theatre app.
Last month, I attended the Adobe and Woodwing Digital Publishing Solution Tour, at the National Theatre, London.
We were joined by John Cunningham, country manager of UK and Ireland of Woodwing, Rupert Knowles, Toby Coffey, head of digital development at the National Theatre and Russell Pierpoint, managing director of Evolved Media Solutions. In addition to many digital publishing experts and enthusiasts within the audience.
Rupert Knowles, business development manager of Adobe
Knowles began the tour with the first UK demonstration of the newly re-imagined Adobe Digital Publishing Solution, which launched on 29 September, as a content-first reading experience. Knowles discussed the adoption rate of the mobile in comparison to the tablet, and the importance of authoring content to every single device.
Explaining the difference between traditional and new responsive layouts, using articles and collections, it was interesting to see the progression in technology.
It was highlighted throughout, that many brands are adopting publishers’ styles.

After a short coffee break, we began the tour again, this time from a user perspective.
Toby Coffey, head of digital development at the National Theatre
Coffey displayed the use of the latest technology with the new, highly innovative, National Theatre app. The app shows a high level of creativity and interactivity around its content, and reflects one of the many brands that are adopting publisher’s content style.
Creating digital innovative content is now in the mission statement of the National Theatre.
“An icon is a privilege, an opportunity…it reflects the users personality”. Coffey wants the app to “sit alongside big brands” on the devices of those who enjoy the theatre, or just culture in general.
Interestingly, the National Theatre digital app is priced higher (at £4.99) than the print equivalent, with the added benefits of exclusive, behind-the-scenes access.
Russell Pierpoint, managing director of Evolved Media Solutions
Pierpoint presented Woodwing’s new cloud-based HTML5 authoring tool, Inception and how it can be used to easily create digital content that can be published instantly to multiple platforms including Adope DPS, Facebook Instant Articles, Apple News or a Web CMS.
Inception is a WYSIWYG model, in which you can compose HTML5 articles using ready-to-go components.
Pierpoint used the above as a demonstration that the content layout adapts automatically with each device.
