Adobe Photoshop - Generative Fill

Generative Fill is a new feature in Photoshop that allows you to create, add, remove, or replace images with simple text prompts. It is powered by Adobe Firefly, a generative AI technology that can produce realistic and diverse results in seconds. In this article, I will show you how to use Generative Fill to enhance your images and unleash your creativity.

What is Generative Fill and how does it work?

Generative Fill is a suite of AI-powered capabilities that let you add, extend, or remove content from images or create them from scratch. You can access Generative Fill from the Edit menu or by right-clicking on a selection. A text-entry prompt box will appear where you can describe the object or scene you want to generate in your image in English only. For example, you can type "a red car" or "a sunset over the ocean". You can also leave the prompt box blank and let Generative Fill surprise you with its suggestions.

Once you click Generate, Photoshop will produce three Firefly-generated variations and show you the first one. You can cycle through them using buttons in the Contextual Task Bar or by clicking the thumbnails in the Properties panel. Each variation is generated non-destructively on a new layer, so you can edit, refine, or remove any creation without affecting the original image. You can also use other Photoshop tools to adjust the generated content, such as adding shadows, reflections, lighting, and perspective.

What are some use cases for Generative Fill?

- Generate objects: Select an area in your image, then describe what you’d like to add or replace through a text prompt. For example, you can add a dog to your photo or change the color of your shirt.

- Generate backgrounds: Select the background behind your subject, then generate a new scene from a text prompt. For example, you can change the season of your landscape or transport your subject to a different location.

- Extend images: Extend the canvas of your image, then make a selection of the empty region. Generating without a prompt will create a harmonious extension of your scene. Generating with a prompt will add content to your image while extending the rest of your scene. For example, you can turn a vertical shot into a wide horizontal image or add more elements to your composition.

- Remove objects: Select the object you want to remove, then generate without a prompt to let Generative Fill make it disappear. For example, you can erase unwanted people or objects from your photo or trim an extra tree from a generated AI image.

Generative Fill is also great for exploring and experimenting with ideas in seconds. You can generate dozens of high-quality concepts quickly with results only a few keystrokes away. You can also try out different styles and themes for your images, such as realistic or surrealistic, photorealistic or artistic.
