Admiral Lisa Franchetti Nominated as Chief of Naval Operations: Championing Diversity and Excellence in Naval Leadership
President Joe Biden's nomination of Admiral Lisa Franchetti as the Chief of Naval Operations is a significant leap forward for diversity and excellence in naval leadership. Franchetti, with her exceptional career spanning over three decades of service, is not only a model naval officer but also a strong advocate for equality and diversity within the ranks of the armed forces.
Born in Rochester, New York, Franchetti embarked on her naval journey in 1985 after receiving her commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Program at Northwestern University. Here, she majored in Journalism, later acquiring a Master's degree in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix and completing a stint at the Naval War College.
Over the years, Franchetti has held numerous prestigious operational roles. From the auxiliaries officer on the USS Shenandoah (AD 44) to commanding officer of the USS Ross (DDG 71) and Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 21, she has demonstrated commendable leadership. She also played a crucial role as assistant surface operations officer on the USS George Washington Strike Group and led the Pacific Partnership 2010 on the USNS Mercy (T-AH 19).
Franchetti’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity was recently showcased in 2023 when she supported the Black Engineer of the Year (BEYA) Stars and Stripes. This initiative aims to honor and encourage minority professionals' contributions and advancements in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Her backing of such a cause underscores her recognition of the importance of diverse perspectives and experiences in enhancing the U.S. Navy's operational effectiveness.
