Adiabatic coolers in the data center - an objective benefit

Many integrators when calculating TCO for data center talking about inappropriate use of adiabatic cooling. Among the reasons called the need for water treatment, high operating costs, etc. But are they right? Let's figure it out.A new generation of the adiabatic cooler with optimized energy, water consumption and low operating costs. Thanks to a specially developed adiabatic chamber, it is now possible to use unprepared water with a salt concentration of up to 350 ppm without any risk to the equipment. This allows extremely high energy efficiency of the data center cooling system!

In order not to limit ourselves to statements, for greater clarity we will consider a concrete example. The data center with a capacity of 500 kW cooling system, which is based on the internal placement chiller, which connected to a dry cooler. The chiller is designed for the operation of a condenser in the range 42-47°C due to the limited capabilities of the cooler. At the same time, we take the energy consumption and the cost of this decision conditionally for 100% (see the table).

Of course, the cost (capital costs) of such a solution, allowing to achieve a significant reduction in fixed costs, will be somewhat larger than the above-mentioned "benchmark": approximately 24% and 82% respectively. But at the same time, energy costs will be reduced by 41% and 74%. In addition (and this is important), the nominal capacity of the cooling system can be reduced by 20%, which, in turn, will reduce the cost of the power supply system.
