Adhesive Tape Testing & Quality Assurance: Ensuring Reliability

Testing adhesives is one of the most essential ways to evaluate the durability and reliability of tapes. Adhesive tapes are now available for a wide range of industries including packaging industry, automotive industry and aero-space industry. Their wide variety of compositions further makes it difficult to evaluate their chemistries and curing processes. For ensuring reliability, relevant adhesive testing and quality assurance methods need to be put in place against failures and contamination issues. Testing adhesives is essential not only to ensure quality, but tape manufacturers rely on these adhesive testing because without proper testing, adhesive tape products will fail to deliver their true purpose.

Experts yield accurate and swift performance adhesive tests for products used in a variety of industries. The data hence generated not only assists material engineers during the selection of the concerned items but also for other adhesive examinations. All the tests that are generated and used for adhesive quality assurance are formulated by the Pressure Sensitive Tape Council (PSTC), which was founded in 1953.

Pressure Sensitive Tape Council (PSTC) was founded to promote and facilitate the production and manufacturing of Pressure sensitive adhesive tape products that are both high in value and performance. The very first manual method for adhesive testing was released by Pressure Sensitive Tape Council (PSTC) in 1955 with additional 8 methods- 180 peel, elongation, thickness, holding power and water penetration. Pressure Sensitive Tape Council (PSTC) has joined hands with the new Global Tape Forum that inculcates five major trade associations in Asia and Europe. The main objective behind the establishment of these trade associations is to harmonize standardized testing methods that contribute to ISO standards in the coming future.?

Additionally, during quality assurance, adhesive tapes undergo a pull test that measures the ultimate tensile strength of the tape. Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) is the peak load that a tape product can endure during a pull test. ASTM D3759 is used to depict the breaking strength and the elongation of pressure sensitive tapes.

In conclusion, adhesive tape testing and quality assurance is performed to analyze how adhesion works under stress and to check the reliability, durability and strength of the adhesives over time.
