A strong bond and adhere strongly to the substrate for long after the curing is the important requirement for most coatings and inks and also beyond film formation is complete. The bond strength between coating and substrate is dependent on the two properties of a material that include:

  • Adhesion?– the bonding strength of an adhesive to the substrate surface
  • Cohesion?– the strength of a bond between adhesive particles/ film itself

Many factors affect the adhesion of ink to a filmic label surface, and one of the most important is the surface coating. This impacts both the visual appearance and the physical performance of the print. In most cases, manufacturers have to prioritize certain properties and also make compromises when developing a top coating for label face material.
