Is ADHD medication not working for you?

Is ADHD medication not working for you?

As psychologists who specialise in neurocognitive assessment, we have observed a fascinating trend in our work with clients who present with symptoms of inattention. There is a significant overlap between being gifted (or giftedness) and inattention, with many of our clients initially seeking an ADHD diagnosis, but ultimately being diagnosed as gifted instead. This observation is further supported by research, including a 2015 study by Minahim and Rohde, which found that many gifted adults display symptoms of inattention, with 37.8% of gifted adults actually possessing ADHD.

So, why might gifted people be more prone to inattention? It actually comes down to a natural curiosity that arises from boredom. Gifted people have a unique way of thinking and processing information, with high intelligence that allows them to quickly understand concepts and ideas, leading to a higher likelihood of becoming bored when presented with tasks or ideas that don't challenge them. As a result, they may draw their attention towards other activities that provide greater intellectual stimulation, such as piecing together the mechanics of a ceiling fan rather than concentrating on a work meeting that isn't engaging them.

What does it mean to be gifted?

Intellectual giftedness means that you think and process information more effectively than over 90% of people your age. While this is undoubtedly an exciting prospect, it can also come with its own set of challenges, such as boredom, frustration, and feelings of isolation. Giftedness can also coexist with other conditions, such as learning disorders, autism and ADHD, creating what psychologists call a "twice exceptional" individual. This can lead to a range of difficulties from behavioural issues to anxiety, and may also mask an individual's giftedness.

Giftedness assessment and supports

Fortunately for gifted adults and children, there are a range of supports available to help embrace each person’s unique situation. The first important step is to get a giftedness diagnosis through assessment with an experienced psychologist. This assessment can help gifted people to better understand their cognitive profile, recognise their strengths and talents, and identify areas where they may need guidance or professional support.

Are you gifted?

If you are wondering whether you or someone you know may be gifted, some key indicators of giftedness include:

  • Being in the top 10% of peers in intellectual, creative, social or physical skills
  • Having an IQ score among the top 2% of peers
  • Demonstrating advanced physical, social or creative aptitude.

Nurturing giftedness can lead to a more fulfilling life where you are most likely to accomplish your full potential.
