ADHD Kids Become ADHD Adults—but Sometimes the Tools Stop Working

Welcome to The Neurodiversity Coach Newsletter. As an Executive Coach, Leadership Trainer and self-professed geek, I've had the opportunity to work with neurodivergent leaders and coach them through many leadership and workplace challenges. Each week I share resources and insights for neurodivergent leaders and the rest of us.

In this week's newsletter we discuss when the tools that worked for neurodiverse leaders stop working.

ADHD Kids Become ADHD Adults—but Sometimes the Tools Stop Working

We do what works until it stops working.

I say this all the time and it’s the essence of what many call a mid-life crisis.

We all have a way we learned to cope with life—either with our personality or skills that we actually learn.

There are now literally millions of adults who are in the work-force who were diagnosed with ADD (ADHD) as children and learned the skills they needed to become high functioning students and progressed into high functioning adults.

Hallelujah, many of the skills they learned helped them succeed in school, progress at work, and get promoted to increasing levels of leadership.

We do what works until it stops working.

Here is where some of those skills learned under the context of a student in a grade or high school are simply incompatible. I work with leaders who come up against this reality and honestly are bewildered.

This is a crucial moment because just like with neurotypical people, we don’t want to look foolish and we don’t know what we don’t know about how we can handle our new reality. Some of us just keep pushing. And thankfully some get there with the pushing. Some, however, just give up. I understand.

What I found works best is working with a coach or someone else who can help you process your own unique challenges and try new things that might work in the new reality.

?Do you ever feel this way? Like you found a strategy for your life that worked and worked and worked but then it just stopped working? This is totally normal in life.

I’d love to hear more about your experience.
