ADHD Households- Getting a Vision

ADHD Households- Getting a Vision

Many of us have this "chaotic" type of household that is so familiar and comfortable but not really working. We need a bit of order here and there that would really improve the day--perhaps especially the weekends! With ADHD members in the family--and sometimes there are many--we could really use some help with order.

Enter the Friday night syndrome: kids are whiny if older and possibly screaming if young, Mom is exhausted after the week's work and Dad just sent a text that he has to work in the morning. Plans have to be changed, dinner has to be something different, and the children are not cooperating. What now?

General organization and routine can be interrupted and ADHD kids may not want to comply with the sudden change in plans. Mom may have run out of new solutions on the fly and Dad feels frustrated that he cannot be with the family and rest. Someone is bound to lose it in a temper fit whether teen, toddler or parent.

Where is your vision? Did you have a vision when you started your ADHD therapy? A vision makes sudden changes, interruptions, and disappointments much easier to handle. With a vision in mind, the goals are clear, readily memorable or accessible and the family cooperates. The ADHD child can envision how to manage crises like this if the parents and family are all on board with like-mindedness.

Cast a vision for your family! Share it, choose one together, and make it a family venture. Keep it clearly communicated and visible. Make reminders and celebrate victories together!
