This ADHD Clickbait Headline Tennis Stops Now

Following on from the destructive BBC Panorama documentary there has been an influx of headlines. They seem intent on causing as much damage as possible with little regard for the condition. This isn't just an attack on ADHD, it's an attack on those with other neurodiverse conditions. I have spoken about this with Daley Jones and we agreed, if this were dyslexia, autism or another neurodiverse condition we simply wouldn't be having these conversations.

Society has all but bed in its opinion that ADHD is the "naughty little boy" behaviour that someone grows out of. We are now seeing the fruits of this horrible stigma that has manifested itself like a disease which we try and repel. There has been a huge backlash against Rory Carson and the BBC for the Panorama documentary, and rightly so. It is irresponsible journalism and those with such large platforms have a greater responsibility to do better.

We are now seeing the likes of Steven Bartlett throwing his hat into the ring to see how much of a storm he can create with a headline. You see, these headlines are manufactured by teams of individuals who have qualifications in marketing, with the sole intention to create emotion and a click. What's the same in these articles publishing such damaging opinions? They are written by people who aren't qualified to do so, they don't have the lived experience of ADHD and the fallout of when it goes wrong.

  • The Diary Of A CEO , 2.09 MILLION subscribers on YouTube, streamed on BBC iPlayer, over 10 million monthly downloads.
  • BBC audience - 39.3 MILLION in March 2023.
  • Daily Mail 368.5 MILLION visitors a month.

That's a pretty big audience for people that are not experts in their field. These companies have the responsibility to differentiate between fact and opinion and produce material that won't lead to discrimination towards disability. They need to remember that ADHD is a protected characteristic in law and to treat it as such. The damage you cause with your irresponsible journalism could cost people their lives and I don't think they quite understand this.

Enough is enough.

Retired. ADHD and Dyslexic.

I now feel a bit invalidated and less likely to inform others of my struggles after this appalling piece of rubbish journalism. I received my ADHD diagnosis privately after being tested for Dyslexia. When it was explained to me, my past life made sense and the weight of thinking that I was a bad person and always letting others down was taken from my shoulders. I am Definitely ADHD and always have been. This crap needs to be challenged to rid society of the stigma of being different.
